I've got a 40 gig HDD in my laptop, and was wondering what kind of performance hit I'd take by compressing the hard drive. I heard (way back in the day) that if you've got a slower HDD and a fast processor (this was back in the 486 days lol) that compression could actually speed things up, since less data is actually physically written to the disk. I don't know if that's still the case, though, but my processor is definatly faster than my HDD. I think my HDD is 5400 rpm or something, maybe slower. 1.7ghz Pentium-M Dothan. Should I compress or not?
