I installed windows on my Vertex 2 60gb I got yesterday. HD tune is telling me I have a warning on Reallocated Sectors Count with a value in the 800's. Is my drive DOA? It seems to work okay, thought it is not as fast as I thought it would be.

Also, the benchmarks before I installed windows seemed snappy (230 read, 190 write, avg), but the response time test seems to hand on random.

Now that I installed windows the benchmarks for read are all over the place. I am at work so I cant get the pic, but it went down int he beginning (normal due to os files I hear) Then it goes up and down pretty wildly.

i have the same messge with HD tune, i installed mine today. My benchmarks are in the thread 'OCZ 60GB 2E, hows it looking'
its very snappy and im happy enough with it

I've also got a 'reallocated sector count' on my new Corsair F60 both Everest pro and HDTune show the same values:

Threshold: 3
Best: 97
Worst: 97
Data: 256

Google search showed this thread (possibly not fact since it's another forum):

Reallocated sector means that your harddrive found a bad sector, and swapped it with a 'reserve pool' of sectors. After this swap, the medium should be free of bad sectors to the operating system. Its a technology designed to make failing sectors on the harddrive cause no trouble for the operating system because it'll just swap a new one whenever it finds that a particular sector is becoming weak (because it takes more time to read that sector than normal).

So "replace that drive now" may be an overreaction. You do need to make sure you have proper backups however, but a drive with reallocated sectors could last for years in good operation.

One exception to this is, if the number rises continuously, like every day it jumps a few. Then you've got a failing harddisk because once the 'reserve sector pool' runs out it cannot hide the bad sectors anymore from the operating system. And remember, a drive can only reallocte a sector if you write to it, or it can still be read from. So sometimes its necessary to do a zero-write on the drive to be able to let it swap the sector. Should the number not increase after a zero-write, your harddrive found no new potentially bad sectors that it wants to swap.

I wouldn't worry about it. SSDs have blocks die all the time. But unlike HDDs (where data can be written, then later not read) SSDs tend to have blocks die after being erased. The write will fail, and then it'll move the data somewhere else.

I basically ask the same question and ran across this answer from one of the ocz ssd techs...

"SMART values within SMART readers for HDD do NOT translate into accurate readings for SSD... This means what you are seeing is NOT what you think it is."

Hopefully their toolbox will come out and report the right SMART info.
