Problem with size in a 250GB HDD

Ok so I have a Maxtor 250GB HDD (I know...I know...) and it says I only have about 21GBs left. When I highlight all my folders and see how much space is being used there is only 137GB being used...where did all the space go? I think this might have stemed from when I had a Windows crash and I had to get onto my computer, I installed Windows XP Professional onto it. How do I correct this mistake in size reading? I want my space back...when I do a error check/disc cleanup, the computer freezes. Maybe that symptom will help you all figure out my problem. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you need service pack 2, also, when you buy a 250gb drive its actually more like 236gbs.

does anyone have a clue here? Im so very stumped.

when I do a CHKDSK it freezes at Step 4 - Verifying Data Files. It just hangs at 0% and never advances.
