Intake or Exhaust

Thread Starter
Im getting one yes only one case fan. Do I get

A) An intake fan
B) An exhaust fan

I was thinking a 12cm fan because they are quieter and move lots of air. My PSU probably couldn't handle 2 fans, and I'm on a tight budget. Would 1 fan do anything at all?

Fans do not take up much power, I would get one intake and one exhaust. But, if you're only buying one, I guess I would go for the exhaust fan.

whats the difference?

because my comps only got 1 fan (yes you heard right), and thats for the CPU.
It takes in air from the top, and then fires it on the heatsink which sits on the CPU , so like...what would mine be classified as?

Crimson Blade,
Yours would be neither! What you have is a CPU cooler fan, intake fan is at the lower front of the case and exhaust is at the back of the case, mid to upper case.

I'd say an intake. Fresh air going in is always better than stale case air moving around. A rear exhaust is pretty much mandatory though...

I vote side intake That way at least some air will be going directly to the cpu.

Actually, on second thought. Run tests with the fan in all positions possible and see which one results in the lowst temperature. The use that one

Id take INTAKE, air can naturally get OUT of your case since hot air rises anyways, if you took an outtake, pretty useless. Id say INTAKE first. =)

as to weather its an intake or exhaust i think is more dependant on its placement... if your going to have it in the rear of the case... definately exhaust. but if its on the side panel... a high flow 12cm(120mm) intake will be good aswell... some detailes on what fan youll be getting and where you wanna place it will better help me/us decide how it should be placed.
