Hyperthreading disabled?

Thread Starter
My processor has hyperthreading according to 3dmark05 but its disabled? How do i enable it? ANd does hyperthreadign have to be supported by your mother board or does it matter? I have a Shuttle AV49Vn and a pentium 4 2.6 Ghz processor. How do i get hyperthreading and how much of a performance gain will i recieve in games and such?

I believe it does have to be supported by your motherboard. If you go into your BIOS, under one of the menus you should see an option for enabling HT.

Yes your mothetboard must support it and if your motherboard does it should be enabled by default otherwise you need to go into the bios and enable it.

there should be an option in the bios to enable it somewhere... but only if your mobo supports it.

and you will see a good jump in performance with it!

My new work rig shipped with HT disabled by default. What a waste. I noticed the performance wasn't up to par, and things ran much better once it was enabled.

im looking at cheap mother boards now.. i want something cheap because im doing a full system rebuild at the end of the summer. So maybe something Asus. or Biostar. The only thing im worried about is taking my old processor out because last time i tried to do that, it was stuck to the heatsink and i forced it by accident and broke the pins. It was a cheap Celeron... so i bought the P4...

They usually come defaulted ot disabled. Once ya enable HT in the bios (under CPU--usually) you can tell in Task Manager on XP-Home by the two graphs for CPU. There will be a little split between what looks like a longer graphical window. The first (I believe) is CPU, and the second window is the HT enabled virtual CPU.
It does make a dif if you're doing lotsa different stuff.
