Boy, did you say a mouthful!

Yes, I've also "heard" that an 8X Zambezi can out fold a 2500K, but there all ways seem to be alot of "ifs" , "buts", and "my friend's friends cousin did it" involved in the story. No, I'm not trying cast doubt that it's possible, it just seems like there may black candles and chicken feathers (or some luck) involved in obtaining that particular reality.

My whole attraction to the 960T thing is "something for free" and the challenge of doing it. The realist in me says it's not worth the risk because at best I wind up pathway that dead ends, even if I get a board that may be Zambezi compatible, as you point out that's not going anywhere either.

In many ways my real temptation is to wait for Ivy and/or Bulldozer II (whatever they're calling that). In many ways I've sort of gotten tired of waiting for the "next best thing" that's going to come out "next month". If it does I wonder if I'll be looking at something in the "2500" class or at one of the mid range 6 or 8 cores (I'm not rich, as much as the "Extreme" chips look nice, one costs only slightly less than my whole rig.) As I'm typing that, I'm thinking that I really dread the thought of a first gen mobo, but I've lumped that before.

When it comes to it it's not the absolute money that's bothering me, it's whether or not I need what I'm buying with that money, of course there are enjoyment factors and future projects (I've seriously considered a water cooling kit as a summer project, particularly if I could figure a way to exhaust heat outside.)

My gut tells me that I'm in one of those rare places where a bit of wheebling is good, at least until it becomes clear what's going to happen with Ivy. My mind says that the clear choice is the 2500 pathway, but my heart would rather that there was some real competition. In the meantime my wallet will likely stay full(er).

Adding the heatsinks to the VRMs on your son's machine is probably not a good idea, unless you think you want a project or think he'd enjoy doing it with you. Of course that's assuming that he's interested in this stuff etc., if he is, it's a small price of admission for something you can do together.

Sigh...I don't think I can keep folding unless I find a work around for this problem.

So here's the story.

Originally I was folding on my HTPC with a 4830 and all was well with the world. Everything was hunky dory and everyone was happy

Then someone offered me a 465 for free and I took it and used it to fold on it. Since I upgraded to that video card everything has been a nightmare.

Let's begin with some of the basic problems with the video card

Because I switched GPU's and manufacturers, the GPU video drivers WON'T let my haupaugge colossus tv tuner card play in windows media center. I'm currently looking for alternative HTPC front ends that will. All I get is audio WITHOUT video

Next I had to cut netflix because Silverlight and Folding don't mix. I like watching movies, not slide shows.

Now I'm having to figure out how to fold and use my HTPC for what was intended to be, a media center.

Sometime down the line I'm going to have to sit down an ask myself "How much more am I going to sacrifice before enough is enough. This PC wasn't built for this and now I'm paying for services I can't use the way I wanted to")

I really have to ask, with as much sacrifice as I've given to folding (just over 3 years now if memory serves) what am I getting in return for the sacrifice of the functionality of my HTPC.

It may sound selfish but I've been looking for workarounds for just under a year now. I'm open to suggestions and help because I really wanna keep folding but I'm at the end of my wits and frustrations. It'd be much easier for me just to quit folding, give the deuces and put my 4830 back in and **** can F@H. I don't want to but I don't know what else to do.

Oh brother! I had a mouth full? Did you count the words in your post versus mine? tongue.gif First, let me show you axipher's FX 8120 HFM: http://67.204.201.132/summary.html This chip is clocked at 4.6GHz with 1866 RAM; I believe. The client he is using is Windows 7 with a VM Ware image of Ubuntu. When this 6904 finishes, he has plans to use a FX optimized kernel for either VM Ware or Native Linux. He will try for 4.9GHz and 2133 RAM. I hear the same thing you do, so I was very interested when axipher said he was going to do some serious FX folding.

I have invested hundreds in watercooling loops before. I was able to squeeze an extra 100 MHz versus a top-end air cooler. What I liked most about it was how cool everything was. I am pretty confident it would extend the lifespan of my hardware. You have one of the best air coolers on the market, but the alternate issue it creates is hogging space, and taking cooling away from your VRM's. My H100 works pretty well, and it allowed me to put a 120mm on my VRM which eliminated my BSOD issues.

My son's rig is technically mine right now. He has to earn the rig with good grades. I was unable to OC past 3.4GHz with no heatsinks on the VRM's. I put some on 4 weeks ago and am at 3.8 GHz right now. I changed the cooler from a Hyper TX3 to an Antec H2O 920 last weekend. This took the temps from around 61C to 42C under load. When it finishes folding it's 6903, I am overcloking it a little more and sticking better RAM in it. This is my project right now, but bare in mind the board was $9.99 and has a 4+1 phase. What I am doing requires the heatsinks and additional cooling.

So, 960T is a highly likely 5 core and has a 50% chance of being a X6. It would need to be at 4.0+ with good RAM to finish 6904. The 8 core FX, even the lower bin 8120 Axi has, seems to complete 6904 with ease, and with a moderate overclock if in Native Linux, or a moderate to advanced oc in VM Ware. Buying one of those guarantees 6903/6904 for however long Stanford keeps the deadlines at where they are. Same thing applies to 2500k.

So, if I were sitting in your shoes....

I would sell the 960T because it sounds like you will need a new board to really get it overclocked and able to fold well enough to justify the power usage. I would do either FX or 2500k because I too can care less about waiting on the next best thing because it often costs a lot, and I would rather see it's performance prior to buying it. You could get a compatible board for ivy though. Ivy testing is looking pretty exciting vs FX. I saw some testing done on tweak Town with DDR3 2600!

Also, the water sounds like a really fun project. What kind of setup do you have for the computer? Is it close to a window? Can it be placed close to a window? Honestly, watercooling produces so much less heat though, but enough heat during the summer down there to make it real uncomfortable! I prefer these all-in-one kits because they have warranties you do not get with custom loops. H100 cools slightly better than the best heatsink, but it is capable of so much more with a few minor mods, better fans, push/pull, lapping, firmer mounting hardware, etc. I picked mine up for $114 at Micro Center last week. I bought 2 extra stock fans to test push vs push/pull out. As-Is, I do not exceed 75C on any core with a 74F Ambient at 1.495v (1.50-1.512v LLC) at 4.8GHz. I run the fans at 1500 RPM, and they are capable of around 3000.

Did I ever mention how much I like your Pineapple avatar! It makes me want to take a VACATION! I am very interested in seeing what you choose to do. Boy that summer heat would be so much easier if you could get that heat exhausted outside. There are a few posts on here with people who do it. I think it would be so worth it!

Edit: Well, looks like I need to add to this post since BM posted at the same time as me.

I am so glad you posted this. I was worried about you. You have been awesome Black Magix! Your contribution to F@H is appreciated so very very much. I have the same issue with my HVR-1250 at times, and I usually need to re-install the driver, and they have a patch for Windows Media Center for my tuner. But, before I even expand more on that, I think this setup is just not going to make you happy at all! It is not a good way to enjoy all the benefits of HTPC. I have Netflix too.

So, solutions....

I have a computer sitting in my closet I used to use for HTPC. I also have a decent newer computer I was going to turn into a HTPC. I think these 2 computers are the only ones I have that have a x16 or x8 slot. I would be more than happy to send one to you, but that gives you like 3 computers sucking power! I am not 100% sure about either computer until I hook them up and test them out. I know neither has a PSU capable of powering that 465 though. So, more money to spend.

1 has a single core 3600+ which may make PPD suffer. It is a Compaq, so no overclocking is possible. I tried everything on getting it to overclock; custom bios is not available, no sister board bios to try, no Set FSB or similar functionality etc...

I think the other is a Athlon Dual core which would work, but I really wanted to hang onto it as a HTPC. The Sempron did ok, but it studdered sometimes on Netflix and in HD Videos.

So, I guess that is no solution huh? Do you have 2 PCI-e slots in it?

I'm actually already running at 3 PC's ATM. (my wife's) 3 and a half if you count my laptop.

I do have two pci-e slots in the machine however it'll run at x16 - x4

Yeah, why do we have to have sooooo many computers! I have like 4 or 5 complete systems other than the 3 in my sig and those 2 I mentioned, but they are old P4's.

HD4830 in x4 and GTX465 in x16? Plug the display into the HD4830? Some people have problems getting AMD and Nvidia to work together though. It is possible though. I have done it myself, but it can be tricky.

Your call. If any of my parts will help, I would gladly try to contribute to allow you to continue. I would hate losing you. I know I made that buy BM a 580 comment a few pages back, but I did not mean it in a bad way. I just felt maybe we could all chip in to get you a better card that can dominate your category. I saw some 580's for $388 brand new a few days back.

What about swapping positions around? I don't know. I just don't want to lose you man, but I understand where you are coming from totally, so if you want out, I am sure everyone on the team can understand that, and we still appreciate EVERYTHING you have done so very much! You were the Captain who brought us a title!

It's not that I want out it's just that I'm trying to figure out how to make this work.

Unfortunately it's Nvidia's problem that's completely screwed me out of a capture card and folding is wrecking my netflix.

Honestly that pc is on it's way out without some proper maintence but....

It needs a
775 cooler, (the current one is absolutely on it's last leg)
More ram (2 gig's [1 stick] just isn't enough for it)

and a way to work....

I've got a few avenues I could explore in terms of keeping that machine online but it would involve getting a barebones machine (new ram, mobo, processor) for my wife.

I've got a few ideas...

I'm wondering what the cheaper option is here

Getting a new motherboard, ram and processor for my wife, allowing me to free up some hardware for a NEW htpc meaning my current one could be left online in the corner of the room OR trying to maintence this one into a working state....

I'll price it out and see what I can do/find.

I have a ton of extra parts I am willing to donate to you at no cost for all your contributions. I will try and inventory them for you tonight, but here is a general idea:

  1. I have a Cooler Master Hyper TX3 cooler that I believe would work amazingly well to fill the cooling need.
  2. I am going to be general from here, but more detailed information will be added tonight.
  3. I have several sticks of DDR and DDR2.
  4. I have a lot of ATA100 EIDE HD's.
  5. GPU wise, old... Raddeon 9250 and Geforce MX 440.
  6. I do have a decent P4 chip with HT, so 2 threads. Those still do ok.
  7. 4 or 5 socket 478 boards. One is an asus that can OC.
  8. Gosh, 6 or 7 cases lol

I may be acquiring about 5 more spare computers by next week, but nothing beyond DDR2 days. There may be a dual core or 2 in the mix.

well my HTPC has been crammed into this so if that cooler will fit into it I'll take that.

Right now it's running 1 - 2 gig stick of ram on one hell of a crappy hard drive (it chugs...literally)
I need to RMA the other ddr2 ram I have lying around just can't take myself to do it. I've got 4, 1gig sticks and 4 2 gigs sticks.

just need to figure out how to make this dual gpu thing work and still fold on the nvidia one and still stream 1080p movies across the network on the second. Also needs to do blu-ray (Got the drive just worried about speed)

Take some measurements:

I have a 2GB stick of OCZ Reaper 1066 DDR2. Will that help?

HD, let me see what I have there when I get home.

I think you can make both work in there, but what PSU? How good is the cooling in there? Folding in that case may be a little hot, but I have not really had the time to look at how it is setup. I will do that tonight as well.

How is the network setup? Is it wireless? Do you have a "N" router? 150 or 300? I have 2 150 usb N adapters I am not using. Problem is, if you have a N router and a few G devices still on the network, you have to use mixed mode which slows down the N adapters. I would get about 5MB/s with them on mixed mode though. That should be enough for streaming HD.
