So I should remove just the old drivers or all drivers for my card, use driver cleaner, then install the latest drivers for my card?

Remove all the drivers for the card and start from scratch. Hopefully it might help. Try turning off ya antivirus program as well and see if that helps, anti virus software can sometimes cause problems.

I am going to reinstall the drivers after I play the game without my antivirus running to see if that helps. But if I tighten my timings will I have to do anything else? Up voltage or use a divider? If I tighten them and it becomes unstable, will I be able to get back into the bios and adjust them back to where they were?
I havent attemped any of this kind of stuff yet.
Thanks

You may have to feed more voltage to get tighter timings, but don't do it unless you need it. Most ASUS boards have a nice feature where they recognize OC failure and allow you to get into BIOS without clearing the CMOS with jumpers or pulling the battery.

I still think it's the drivers though

You will have to drop to mid-low settings for F.E.A.R. on that card. There will be no difference between the renaming of the F.E.A.R. executable since this is ony done to address an ATi issue and not an Nvidia one.

One thing that will give you far better framerates online is to use a dedicated sound card. Offramp your processor I/O with a Sound Blaster Audigy install and get an ~5 - 10fps increase overall. Disable onboard sound in your BIOS as well.

Get another 7,200 rpm drive and install it on an SATA port if you are on IDE or an IDE port if you are on SATA. Install all your games on that secondary drive. This should well help you with your lag if that lag is the problem of the system and not your internet pipeline and gameserver.

Most of the setting in the options are set to max. Some I reduced in hopes of eliminating the lag but it didnt work. My old card ran the game fine, 6600td, with many of the options at max. As great as I would know anyways. This is the best system Ive ever had but dont know what its like with a new 7800 or 2 cards running SLI.

I only play the single player game, only have dial-up
ISP. I cant get a new harddrive, ive already bought new ram, vid card and external harddrive withing a couple months. Which I kick myself now cause I saw XFX 6800gt's on sale for less then I paid for my 6600gt. Im going to mess around with it this weekend, replace the drivers, tighten my ram and play without virus prog running.

Just a thought here, after you do all the driver cleaning and have your new ones installed clean try uninstalling and reinstalling your games. Some games put a device name in as a last known rendering device and unless you know where to find and change it a reinstall is the only way to go. If you don t wanna loose your save data find where it puts them in your directory and copy just the saves with no other config files in there and you can replace the saves later. I went from a 9550 to a 7800GS and had to reinstall Doom3 and CoD2 both of which saw huge performance increases after reinstalation. Quake 3 I hae had so long I knew where to find the info I needed to change. The name of the rendering device must match the name it uses in device manager though if you are doing it manually and make sure all caps and spaces are the same. Hope this helps.

Ok so now I have a few things to try this weekend, thanks all.

For removing the drivers, I take it DriverCleaner will remove all of them?
Then reinstall the new drivers. Again, new to this kind of stuff. Do you
uninstall them in the device manager or physically remove the driver files?

I have onboard audio on my mobo. Would getting a sound card and
freeing up the onboard audio result in better frame rates? Ropey mentioned
it would for online play but how about single player play?

If you were to purchase a Sound Blaster X-Fi value edition sound card you will experience more fps which should translate to less lag however I still say that you are playing with a 6600GT and Max settings for F.E.A.R. on a 2.8GHz Prescott and 6600GT is not the proper place to be playing.

You seem to want to stay at those settings so I would advise you to sell the 6600GT and move to a minimum of a 6800GT if you want to have those video settings.

Unistall Nvidia driver thru the add and remove programs.
Reboot. The windows will say it has found new hardware, ((Click cancel))
Then use Driver Cleaner. On the list of stuff you will see Nvidia
Clean more then once. I generally run it up to 5-8 times. Then download new driver.
