Currently Own:

CPU: X4 940 AM2+
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-644-_-Product

HDDs: Two (2) SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM SATA
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822152185

PSU: CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139005

Still Need:

Motherboard
HSF (for CPU)
RAM
Graphics Card
Case

What I am currently thinking:

MB: MSI 785GT-E63 AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 785G HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard ($80)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130266

HSF: Scythe SCKTN-3000 92mm Sleeve "KATANA3" 3Heat Pipes CPU Cooler ($29)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835185096

RAM: Kingston HyperX T1 Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) ($96)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820104098

Graphics Card: MSI N250GTS Twin Frozr 1G GeForce GTS 250 1GB 256-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card ($105)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127478

Case: Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case ($100)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129021

Above is my current plan on what I am going to purchase. I am pretty confident I am going to buy the antec case because the promo code expires today. I am still up in the air about the board and graphics card. I chose the motherboard based on the fact that I might buy an AM3 processor in the future. I plan on running the two HDDs in a RAID configuration. The MSI motherboard also comes in a 790X model that has two PCI express 2.0 x16 slots instead of one but I heard this model isn’t as good as the 785G.
And as far as the graphics card goes it seems like it got some solid reviews and there is a nice MIR offered. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would honestly try to sell the 940 and buy an AM3 CPU so you can buy a DDR3 mobo and RAM. DDR2 is old tech and wont be usable for your next rig

I understand the fact that it is old technology but I'd rather use what I have. I'm sure a 3.0ghz quad core and 4gb of ddr2 ram will be just fine for what I do. The two games I only see myself playing is counterstrike 1.6 and starcraft 2. Next time I upgrade i'll prob be getting an AM4 motherboard with ddr4 ram anyway.

As far as my budget goes, I'd like to keep the graphics card between $100 and $200.

If you want to keep the AM2+ board but have room for future upgradability, find a Phenom II 9x5.

Also, whoever told you a 785G is better than a 790X is blowing smoke. The 785G is a mainstream chipset designed to incorporate integrated video. The 790X is a performance chipset and its only difference to the 790FX is x8 x8 in Crossfire instead of x16 x16.
