skt.939 venice for the money, probably only 10-20 bucks more than a 754 venice. And you have the ability to have dual channel memory.

Well if you must look at a socket 754 and cheaply too I would look at :
AMD 64 DTR 3000+...here..for USD$115.00
and place it on an ASUS K8N-E for AGP..here or for PCI-e go the ASUS K8N-E DELUXE..here.

I think you'll find the s754 Semprons are 90nm....I know my 3100 is and I'm pretty sure the 3000, 2800 and 2600 are too. (I may be wrong).

as for OC, I currently have my 3100@2.55 (284x9) with 2:1.66 RAM divider (RAM@232MHz) with Vcore@1.5. it is stable until I close prime95 at 6hrs cos I need my pc back and max temp 42C.

1M Super Pi in 37sec.

I'll post screen shots if there are doubters

If I had a DFI board I reckon I could push it further than 2.5 by using lower mult and higher fsb (ASUS K8N limited to 300).

Just remembered about ANOTHER friend who has one, and its damn hot! But your sempron is a 754! it isnt the 754 mobile stuff were talking about now?

I have heard the 939 Venice cores do very well. Since you are going for a cheaper system I would go for the 3000+ s939 Venice, or the 3200+ s939 Venice, the 3200+ would be more benificial to overclocking because of its 11x multiplier.

Another good reason is that the 754's do not have dual memory controllers like the 939 socket does.
Well, first, this is for my younger bro's future rig, so it doesn't really matter whether it's fast! ( ...secretly ...) Besides, I want to have an easier time fragging him! (more ). Because of this, it has to be super cheap, so he can actually afford it. So I think i'll point him toward the Sempron64 palermo, and lend some of my expert ocing skillz.

Thanks for the input!

Sorry for randomly disappearing and resurrecting old threads. You know how school and work can get....
