Just ordered parts for new PC! - Page 2

Received the Pentium D 820 and the HYper X PC2 5400 from Adeoliver today--looks to be in perfect condition--mobo case and OC arrive tomorrow (I hope) should have this new one online by the weekend.

Wish I had 2 gynormous HDDs to run in RAID for the initial setup--it's soooo much fun loadng the OS on a temporary HDD....especially an acient IDE 40 gig for a PVR lol.

Getting pretty excited about the build--the Hyper X is good-looking stuff--metallic blue heat sinks look sweet.

After retrofiting the AIW 9600 I had laying around to my main rig so I could do some encoding I realized once again why I do not want to go that route with the new rig--ATI catalyst and MMC drivers just don't work right. cause instability, hog resources and best of all shortly after a seesion of encoding I got my first Stop Error that rebooted me in the middle of some work--the first stop error not counting all the stop errors the smae st up caused previously.

I want an HD tuner and hardware Mpeg encoding--is that too much to ask? Apparently it is in the USA--but not in Europe--gotta wondr why (flags?)

The only option I have found is to use 2 cards and a Vcard--or an HDTV Wonder and an AIW--maybe the x1800 AIW works better--or maybe I can get a Euro version of the Hauppauge HVR1300 with 2 tuners and an encoder on one card--now that would rock.

I like it when the parts start arriving!

Took a few shots along the way--ECS mobo is very attractive--a deep burgundy/purple with a flourescent orange PCIe16 bus. The CoolerMaster case is very nicely made--hard to believe you get that build quality for $45. Mesh front with removable foam filters. I swapped the DL DVD Burner from my WaterClcoker into it and it looks too good to remove--guess I'll be getting some replacements for the main rig.

Had a Coolermaster Hyper L 3 to mount on the CPU. My first LGA 775 install--way easier than any other previous build--the HS literally snaps into the mobo--that's it. Kinda loud--but I'll see what I can do about that.

Had a Coolermaster Aerogate 3 fan controller for the top Drive bay--spent a lot of time routing the leads for the temp sensors and got the PSU in when I realised it would be physically impossible to connect the power to the Aerogate w/o removing the PSU and reaching deep into the bay from the case interior.Mangaed to get the power connector attached and when I went to power it up for the first time POOF wet the Aerogate--might have had the connector on wrong or something--anyway it is toast now ($40 DTT).

So I rewired the fans (2 Antec LED 80mm and 1 TT LED 120) to the molex and through a fan mate. Way too loud with the 3 PSU fans, CPU fan, 3 case fans--too too much. So I unplugged the 80mm exhausts and left the 120 intake on low--a little better--the PSU is the loudest part--so that'll have to be upgraded to a quieter model.

Various issues still to be resolved on the build--need to get the DDR2 667 recognised. Need to get the OC funstions in BIOS to unlock. Still installing and upgradiung everything as I post...

A couple more shots. As is evident there is definitely enough room for internal WCing this case--even though it is MicroATX.

Ressurected the fan controller! Usually when a poof of acrid smoke swirls out of a device it is history --but much to my amazement it was unharmed--I have no idea what I misconnected--but it works now. Got 4 temp monitors and can keep all the fans churning at their slowest speeds.

Too bad Speed Fan does not control the CPU fan--it runs about 2900 RPM all the time even though the CPU temp is only 29C.

The ECS mobo pretty much sucks for Over Clocking as there are zero options to adjust any og he cool stuff like RAM timings, RAM speed, multiplier, FSB--basically all the stuff am overclocker would want is missing fromt he menu.

I want to give credit to AdeOliver for setting me up with the processor and RAM--they are awesome. Accordig to PC Wizard, PCMark04, SandraSiSoft and CPU ID the RAM is running at 333 PC 5300--which is what it is in SPD--that 333 threw me off--as I am more familiar with DDR than DDR2--welcome to PCI express...

I thought my WaterClocker was loud after mounting that Vantec Tornado--but the HS fan on the Centurion is a lot louder. The CoolerMaster Hyper L 3 is definitely keeping the Smith cool. 29C folding is about 6 C over ambient (room) temp--it is actually cooler than the mobo which is at 32 C.

I ran ClockGen to see if I could tweak this mobo, but it is not supported.

Awesome build. Man you must have a bucket loads of money lying around to have all the awesome systems you have or maybe your just spend all you free money on your pc (like me). Good luck with the video capture card.

Well yes and no. I spend a lot of time researching builds and not building them--so when I finally do build one I have about the best pricing possible worked out. The single most expensive item was Windows XP pro SP2 OEM ($140 plus shipping from the Egg). I got a great deal on the CPU and RAM. The rest of the hardware I bought was about $300--so the total expenditure was about $500 not counting the SW.

However I do have bucketloads of interesting PC parts lying around from years of modding. I haven't had to run out and buy a cable or a fan or a controller in quite a while.

The Coolermaster fan controller is from 5 or 6 years ago. The Dual layer dirve is only a year or so old. The PSU is crap--a Mad Dog 450 with too many 80mm fans--I would prefer a single 140mm fan. The fans are years old. The round cables were lifted from a dead PC and the 160 gig Maxtor was lifted from my main rig--but it originally came from a build 6 years ago.

I got lucky with the Coolermster case matching the DVD and fan controller--the drive was lifted from my main rig--so now I have no burner on that PC.

Over the course of many years bucketloads of money have been spent--but as I find anytime I try to sell some of the gear I get about 25 cents on the dollar--so I just keep everything.

Appreciate the compliments--and it is definitely a lot harder to decide what kind of capture card to buy than i thought. There are dozens and dozens of slightly different versions--documentation is scant and except for Hauppauge, tech support is non-existent (ATI especially in this regard).

I have found that building mid-tech is much more affordable and a good excuse to overclock!

Good deal. Boy that ram looks very purdy in that rig, glad you like them, and remember they dont only look good but they will run rock steady at DDR2-800(in the case you ever use them in an overclocking rig) Nice build, simple and clean.

Thanks for dropping in--and thanks for setting me up in the Dual Core Club lol--believe me if I had known the ECS mobo was not an OCer I would have looked further.

I have a feeling that RAM is going to be transplanted into a more OC friendly Rig in the near future....

You Rock!

Modded the Centurion slightly--removed the air horn on the side panel and covered it with sound deadening mat--temps didn't change at all--need a quiet PSU and life will be soo much sweter. I hate PC noise....

Bought some plexi today for another mod to another rig---but will have a piece left over==thinking about doing the classic side panel window thing...
