Xandros

There you go.

Yeah, I agree, Windows is a terrible product, especially for the average home user. It's prone to unstabibility, and flaws, most people don't know that "uninstall" doesn't actually remove everything, ect, ect.......

But since there is no real competition, there's no easy choice. Mac OS is propietary (hopefully not for much longer) and those systems are terribly expensive and no way to build your own. Linux lacks some support and definatly doesn't have the PR machine Gates has......

So where does that leave you? Running Windows like everyone else, cussing it's quirks and flaws and bugs and glitches.

It's weird that it states your Key is invalid for SP2. The Genuine Advantage tool, I thought, required SP2 to work in the first place, and anyway, they can't block critical security updates if they think you have a pirated copy, they can only block non-critical updates.

Looks like a 4 hour wait on hold for Customer Service is in your future.....

Or try running Magic Jellybean to varify what you have compared to what your # is!

WORK AROUND!

since all he wants to do is install sp2 use the following directions in this thread. Or all he has to do is disable axtive x plugins in ie and he can update like the rest of us hackers.

I posted a tidbit of info in this subject

http://www.overclock.net/windows/790...tml#post809591

Since you own it it should be ok i guess.

All i say is call M$...

it cannot be all that bad, and the worst they can do is say, "Sorry, but this windows XP is not usable on this computer...."

But like I said, I have called/e-mailed/chated M$ a few times, they are kinda good people, I like their chat feture....

But yeah it will not activate if you have put a new Motherboard in or dont have SP2, but it will let you download if you have a LEGIT CD-KEY.

If you have a legitimate CD key, they will know this and you can get a way to re-auth your computer by deactivating the CD key from install and reactivating it when you call them.

I have done this multiple times in the past.

The main thing is to use the phone call method for activation rather then the internet one.

Keep in mind you can always reinstall with a slipstream...

Of you can download SP2 for network install (from a previously validated PC or website) and then try and install it from there. I have had that work ONCE but it did not work when I have tried to install on a PC where you already downloaded the WGA active-x control already.

I have a solution to all these problems. Use Linux. I mean, you can't play all the games, but if you're not a gamer, there's a lot of different stuff that's just as good if not better on linux. also, you can use a few different emulators, for a lot of the newer games (i.e. cedega), and the coolest thing is , most of the OS's are free, just got a bundle of 15 Ubuntu CD's for free about a month ago.

but in response to the thread, I just called them, and said it was the same computer, even though I had changed builds, I mean, nothing was the same except for my floppy and DVD burner, and they gave me a new key. I used the same dell CD for about 3 years on multiple builds, just make sure you have the product key and Don't LOSE IT. You can pretty much keep Windoze running on different pc's for quite a while. And I know it goes against all we've been taught, but if they ask if it's the same computer...lie, and tell them yes. old William Gates has enough money as it is.
