Looking for explanation

Thread Starter
New to overclocking, and ram specs. I'm used to if it's the right speed, it'll be fine, but with getting into overclocking, I'm not sure what these numbers mean and what's good/bad/indifferent.

My present rig is:
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (Venice)
ASUS A8N-E
Raidmax Glacier cooler
PNY Verto GeForce 6600GT PCI-e
1Gig SpecTek PC2700 DDR (2x512)
Maxtor 80gig Sata
Maxtor U-ATA 160G 7200rpm
Maxtor U-ATA 80G 7200rpm Primary
ASUS CD-Rom 52x
HP DVD-RW DL

Now, I'm looking to overclock the system, and can find no specs about this ram, with the exception of what's on the sticks themselves.

SpecTek
P64M6416HHB-6A
512Mb PC2700 DDR
0403 TRKA N 37966

That's all I can find. I'm looking to upgrade the ram to Corsair XMS memory, but do not know anything about the specs that I should be looking for. I don't know what "Cas Latency" means, or what the "Timing" means.

If someone can make a suggestion for the upgrade, it's greatly appreciated. I want to do this before I start overclocking the processor. I know I can get great speed out of this proc, but don't trust the ram since it was inexpensive.

Thank you all for your assistance with this issue.

RAM is a strange animal.
IT can and will increase in speed along with the CPU's HTT increases but can be modified to play better with those increases.
For example, DDR400 CAS2-3-4-6 which runs those timings @ that given speed may also be sold as DDR500 with slower timings like CAS3-3-4-6 and run fine at those speed/timing combos.
What is important is do you plan to OC and to what speed, so dependant on how high the CPU's HTT or bus speed is, is how fast is the relavant RAM's speed.
So considering the above if you have DDR500 you can run the RAM @ the same speed of the CPU so long as you keep the HTT @ or below 250MHz which will give you a 1:1 CPU:RAM ratio. When you get above the RAM's default speed you will have several options.
1. Increase the vdimm or RAM's voltage.
2. Adjust the RAM's timings dependant on what the default timings are.
3. Set a Divider or set the RAM's speed to a slower DDR standard, ie instead of Auto, you may need to set the RAM to 333, 266 so it's under clocked and has room to rise along with the increases HTT of the CPU!

some new RAM would be good if you want to start to OC. since you only have PC2700... your system is not even running up to what it can. (by default your system wants DDR400 or PC3200)

I have some Corsair XMS 3200C2PT (platinum color heatsinks) and it operates at 2-3-3-6 timings. it works decently well on my Asus A8n-SLI Deluxe board which would be similar to your board. My OCZ Platinum rev. 2 works much better on that board and runs at 2-2-2-5 timings. the Corsair OC's to about DDR500 with 3-3-3-8 timings and the OCZ will do DDR500 with 2.5-3-3-7 and DDR600 with 2.5-4-4-8.

I'm planning on pushing the proc to about 2.8Ghz because that's what I've seen them do. That was on a different motherboard (MSI), but with the Asus I have, I was told I should have no issue pushing to that with the heatsink/fan combo I have.

If this is pushing too hard with a heatsink/fan please let me know. I'm just going from what I've seen run in a similar system.

So the OCZ ram would be better to use than Corsair? I'm just trying to get the best bang for my buck and these specs are still new to me.

Thanx to all for the input.

if you want to go to 2.8 and keep your ram at a 1:1 ratio you really should be looking at RAM that uses samsung TCCD IC's.
you'll need to get your htt to 311Mhz to reach 2.8Ghz w/ that cpu bc it only has a 9x multiplier. TCCD is the only RAM that can reliably reach those frequencies and to get DDR600 certified TCCD you will usually have to shell out about $200.
My OCZ Platinum Rev. 2 will do DDR600+ so you might want to take a look at some of that. I had mine up on ebay a while ago, but they didn't sell so I stuck them in my HTPC. let me know if you're interested bc I don't need them anymore

Is that 2x512 sticks or is that one stick?
How much are you looking to get? I'm just trying to get the best product at the cheapest price. So I'm searching online for prices from like Tiger, but if I can help someone else out, then I'll do that.

Just let me know.

How much do you want for them, shipped to 17011??
I'm waiting for the tax return to get them, so it'll be a week or so, but if you don't mind waiting, I'll get them from ya if the price shipped is right.
