whitch is faster to run raid 0
post #2 of 10
SATAII - btw SATAII doesnt run at 3GB\\s - that is a myth. It is designed to run at 300mb\\s.

Thus SATAII would be the best choice - and remember, the more drives in RAID0 the faster it becomes! (untill it hits a physical limitation)

check on the manufactors' site - itll give you a full list there - you may also need some drivers. It may also have a guide to setting RAID0 up on your mobo

Yes your motherboard has RAID 0 built in. You can use only up to 2 hard drives with your motherboard unless you get a raid controler.

Yep and that will be the best choise pricewise that is.

2 discs roughly double the speed, whareas 2x2discs = 4discs only gives you roughly 50% extra for the bouble price.

Roughly explained: (not entirely acurate figures, but close cigar)
1 disc = 50 mb/s
2 discs = 100 mb/s
4 discs = 150 mb/s

So yes 4 discs is faster, but is it worth it?

Also remember, scores in a benchprogram is one thing. Real life is another.

300 mb/s is simply the overall transfer bandwidth and cannot be sustained by any hard drive you can purchase. The fastest hard drives on the market are Sata1 Raptors and this has been proven time and time again. Even the brand new Sata Raptor 150 is still only Sata1 because they don't feel SataII offers any real benefits to the consumer. The faster access and read times of the Raptors will beat out SataII drives in applications and you can find several reviews backing that claim by Western Digital. If price is no object, Sata Raptors are what you want for performance.

Well, thats because its not 3GB/s its 3Gbps. 3 gigabits per second. 8 bits per byte. The lower case b stands for bits while an upper case stands for bytes.

3 Gigabits not Gigabytes per second. Just like 5MB internet = 500kb/s.

The SATA2 is faster, but barely.

5MB Internet is actually a 40Mb internet connection

MB= MegaByte
Mb= Megabit

Same thing for GigaByte and Gigabit
