Quick mobo question

Thread Starter
I've seen the ads for the x-fi sound cards and it says you can get up to 40% more frames per second in games when using a good or ANY sound card which isnt onboard. I have a good rig but i use my onboard sound. could this be why i get horrible performance in source?

Dont let the ad fool you. I dont think you'll be seeing anywhere near 40%, more like an average of 5-10%. The sound card takes stress off the cpu and uses its own processor to process sound. Anything is better than onboard, but I dont think its the main reason why you are getting bad performance in source. Try updating your video drivers and turn off page filing since you have more than enough ram.

I play source on 1024 x 768 with aa and af both on 4x. when i get into 30 man servers and get into big gun fights with lots of players on screen and lots of muzzle flashes my fps drops down to hell, about 20-25. Im on a 19' lcd with the refresh rate @ 75mhz

-edit
are you sure i should turn the paging file off?

I've also tried to play using the new drivers off the nvidia website but they give me absolutely no perfomance gain, if anything I'd say they make games run a bit worse than forceware 81.98

You have 2 gigs of ram which is more than enough. It will keep the game in the system memory rather than dumping it off to page filing during the game. This should be the lag significantly if page filing is being used. I have mine turned off and play FEAR without a hitch.

How did you go about installing the drivers? Did you using driver cleaner in safe mode to uninstall first? This might also be a problem.

Im not really noticing anything with the paging file off, maybe a little improvement but nothing too noticable.. can anything else be causing crappy perfomance?
