i7 930 First Build - looking for advice/opinions

Hey all, first time poster here... I'm looking to start a build very soon (my first) and to start ordering the parts for the build, around 2k$, please let me know what you think. I also have some concerns and questions I will address later in this, any tips would be helpful as well, thanks!

Parts:
  • Case: Cooler Master ATCS 840 Full Tower
  • Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD5
  • Processor: Intel Core i7-930
  • Memory: Mushkin Enhanced Ridgeback 6GB DDR3 1600
  • Graphics Card 1: MSI GeForce GTX 480
  • Graphics Card 2: BFG GeForce GTX 275 (Dedicated PhysX)
  • Power Supply: Corsair TX750W
  • Optical Drive: Plextor 8x BD-Rom, 16x DVD-Rom, 24x CD-Rom
  • Hard Drive: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 1TB 7200RPM
  • Solid State Drives: 2 OCZ Vertex 2 60GB
  • CPU Cooling: Prolimatech Megahalem Rev. B + Scythe 120x25mm SlipStream x2 + IX Indigo Xtreme Compound
  • Case Cooling: Cooler Master 120mm Rear Fan + Cooler Master 230mm Front Fan + 2 x 230mm Top Fans + Scythe 120mm SlipStream Bottom Fan
  • Monitor: ACER 23.6" 120Hz LCD
  • Operating System: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

That's the component list a friend and I have come up with (mainly him because he knows more than me). I'm pretty nervous about ordering everything and then putting it together and something going horribly wrong.

My first concern would probably be with the CPU Cooling and the RAM - I have a tendency to get paranoid about things not fitting properly and I'm curious as to if my Megahalem + Push/Pull Fan Method will actually obstruct the RAM slots on this particular motherboard.

My second concern is with the dual graphics cards and dedicating one to PhysX, and the cooling required. First off, I would go liquid cooling but it's not necessarily in my budget so I'm sticking with the heatsink + push/pull method, so I'm going to be adding another fan to the bottom of the case to help with the cooling of the graphics cards. I was curious if its worth using my current GTX 275 in my new build as a PhysX dedicated card but I don't have any knowledge of using two graphics cards in one system, let alone one dedicated just for PhysX. I guess you could say I'm pretty clueless on the whole SLI thing and If you can even SLI two different cards and dealing with a card you want to dedicate only to PhysX. Mainly need to know if its worth it?

That's all I can think of right now but I would greatly appreciate any tips or help that can be offered, thank you! And If I left anything out, let me know =)

I'd swap the 275 out for a 250 if it's just physx. 275 is overkill. Other then that it's a very nice rig

Well, Mafia II recommends a single GTX280 just for PhysX, so it's not a bad idea to go for the 275

I understand and appreciate the information, but as it stands I currently own a 275 GTX and figure I might as well put it to use in the new PC as a dedicated PhysX instead of buying a whole new graphics card for it.

Sweet, thanks for the info! I feel like this build can be quite a step up from my old build. I just hope everything goes as planned when all parts arrive and it's ready to build, kind of a newbie in that field.

If you ever need detailed help while building, just hit me up over msn or skype

That rig will definitely keep you playing all games on highest settings for a couple of years

Wow, thanks Kcuestag, I really appreciate that. I may just have to take you up on that offer. I'm a little sketchy about using a thermal compound I've never used before but I'm told its the best and pretty easy to apply, I'll prolly watch some videos on that beforehand. I just honestly have concerns with everything fitting properly, I know my way around the inside of a PC pretty well but this will be my first time truely building a PC from scratch.

Last February I built my sig rig and it was the first time I ever build a Pc, just like you.

Trust me, it is pretty easy, since then, I've been building many Pc's for many friend's and neighbors.

If you need any help, just let me know, but I'm sure you'll do great!

About thermal paste, it's pretty easy, just a pea size of thermal paste into the CPU and place the cooler, the thermal paste will expand it's self.

Cheers.

That's definitely reassurance, I appreciate it.

Indigo Xtreme is the compound in which you apply it on the CPU, close the case, dont hook up any fans and turn on your PC for 5-10 minutes, letting the CPU heat up and evenly distribute the thermal compound over the CPU like a liquid metal, then turning off the PC and applying the cooler and youre done. Seems simple enough but with my luck something will go wrong =P

Also, my 750W PSU is enough for this rig, yes?
