Thread Starter
i have always ran ati was running x850xtpe wanted upgrade so i bought a evga7800gt off ebay w/zalman VF700-CU installed card is supposed to be new that remains to be seen as that is an aftermarket cooler my question is i read in a post somewhere that the factory cooler cools the voltage regulators on the 7800 and when switching to aftermarket cooling u need a cooler just for it, as i said this new to me so wondering if any of u nvidia guys could help me out also the heatsinks the kit has for the ram look like maybe a plastic does anyone know anything about this cooler is good or should i invest in a different one before burning the card thanks

You can get a 7900, it doesn't cost much more, and you get a performance boost. I will get a better cooler for my graphics card, but not anything else. Also, have you heard of SLI? (scalable link interface) It connects 2 identical cards through an internal bridge so you get up to 80% more performance.

The fan on the Zalman will help cool the voltage regulator. The heatsinks that come with the Zalman are aluminum and should work ok. If it were me, I'd take off the Zalman and use AS5 and also just to check his mounting job. If you're not comfortable doing that, then leave it alone unless temperatures are bad.

I would not use a Zalman. I would rather use a solution that moves the air outside the case and not recirculates it within the case. Arcitic cooling devices are better for this in my opinion.
