IDE HDD + Sata HDD

Thread Starter
hi, right now i have 2 internal IDE HDD's inside my pc and 1 USB external HDD. i was wondering if i could purchase a SATA HDD and put it inside my PC, even though im running IDE. would i be able to run the SATA as a slave while running the 2 IDE HDD there? or do i have to have it all the same platform?

Dennis

ps. my motherboard supports SATA. 4 ports.

From what I understand, IDE and SATA can run together, just there must be defined slave and master. I was use the SATA as master, so it would load windows faster, and put game files onto it. Use the IDE and storage for music, documents, ect.

This is what I *think* to be true, someone may be able to give a clearer answer.

IDE is the only hard drive that has Master / Slave.

Since SATA only has one cable each hard drive, there's no need for a filter or buffer between which is the master and which is the slave because they have they're own lanes.

Before you go reformatting your pc, make sure that you have a correct motherboard. So, if you know the make of your motherboard, then you can reformat, until then, make sure that your motherboard can support it.

1st of all, fill out your System Specs (User CP > Edit System Specs).
2nd of all, what is your motherboard? (re: 1st question) Some motherboards wont defaulty support your SATA drive.

I'd suggest what I did, make things much simpler. Install Windows on the fresh SATA drive with the IDE drives (i have two 120GB IDE) disconnected. This way it doesn't cause issues with Windows installation. Once windows is installed, disconnect your dvd drive and plug in the IDE drives, so you get , C, D, E as your hard drives...not C hard drive, D DVD drive, E, F Hard drives. I have no problems at all with my setup. 1 36GB Raptor as my bootable drive, two IDE 120GB as data drives and a 250GB SATA as a backup drive for everything.
