PS3 UT2007, new screens...WOW! - Page 3

Only because console devotees had never before been able to do such a thing. It was old hat for PC gamers, so we barely yawned. I mean, I remember feeling that way when I first played Warcraft 2 or Quake online...ten years ago. Now it's nothing special, I expect it; and so I wonder what the fuss is about when console gamers go all gaga about online gaming. Welcome to 1996, fellas.

This is only made possible because Halo 2 is what it is... a console game.
Poor man's LAN party. PC gamers were doing it MORE than 10 years ago.

This conversation just identifies one of the pitfalls you fall into when you try to compare PCs to consoles. The fact that PCs were doing networked gaming a zillion years ago does not belittle the fact that it is finally coming into maturity on the much cheaper console platform. But at the same time, console gamers should not act surprised when PC gamers tell you to "shut up already" about how great a game Halo is, because it's mediocre at best when compared to its PC counterparts.

Why are we even talking about Halo in a PS3 thread, by the way...

How about they actually make the game look a little more realistic before going overboard on the bling and brightness. It looks like a gritty and dark area of a city, yet its so bright? I thought HDR was supposed to make it look realistic (see Lost Coast), but when is the last time your eyes saw that kind of lighting? most of those pictures look like concept art anyway, not in game shots.

Since to my understanding the Direct X 10 specs for hardware havent been completely finalized thnx to m$ lagging I bet the game isnt running with everything that it could be, chances are its got a beta version of like HDR 2.0 and Shader 4.0 beta or maybe even not running either. I doubt its running at full spec power or "Holy $hit" level as UT2k4 called it. I think it will look even better since we have like 6 or so months til we even see it I believe, unless it comes out when vista does which means it will come out one day.

well i dont have 2000 dollars to spend on a computer that can get up to PS3 graphics, so for 500 or 600 bucks the PS3 is a pretty good deal

Mortal Kombat Vs Street Fighter? Both really good fighting games, and both had a completely different art style. Whats wrong with over emphasizing on lighting and such. Its UNREAL tournament. Since when hasn't an Unreal game had big flashy and brigh graphics.

HDR has nothign to do with how "real" things will look. Its a coding of how light can affect the brightness of which you see objects. The HDR in lost coast also seemed to have a kind of lens focus on it which also changed as the overall lighting you took in changed as those ranges changed (why its called HDR). Oblivion looks great and it has HDR, but it doesn't look exactly like HL2:LC, it still has HDR...

But the entire point of expending a zillion clock cycles rendering HDR (or any other lighting or shadowing technique) is to make the game world look more realistic. When I ran the leaked Doom 3 alpha code, I was astounded at how real the game looked; and that was at an ugly, gritty 640x480 resolution. But because of the spectaculat lighting, it was still the most realistic looking game I had ever seen. HDR accomplishes the same thing.

Maybe I didn't get my point across... Just from what I have seen HDR can be applied differently to get different results.
