is this correct?

I score roughly about 6,800 on 3dmark05 with my rig below with the card settings on low (image settings are on high perfomance and both aa and af are tuned down to 2x)when i play on 40 man cs:s servers i get horrible fps loss on 1024 x 768 res and ingame settings on either medium or low (mostly low), i'd say it drops down to about 20-25 which is a disgrace, my computer should be pulling much higher fps. i'm on forceware 81.98 and currently using direct x 9.0c. Also, I heard that using onboard audio slows down gaming due to the fact that the mobo is doing more at the same time, will a seperate sound card increase performance or is that just an urban myth?

Yes, get a third party sound card. When you see motherboard reviews on sites like HardOCP, they bench the board with on-board audio on and off. It typically effects game performance by 10-15%.

Even a cheapo sound blaster audigy base OEM model will give you better sound than you are getting from your onboard.

that may not resolve your speed issue. It may be your kingston ram if nothing else. Kingston makes decent reliable memory but not from a high performance perspective. Also are you running 2x1GB or 4 512's? 4x512 on may nf4 boards causes the ram to run at a slower speed. Its a side effect of the controller. Even 2x512 may be faster for gaming and benches in your case.

I'm not too worried about the actual sound, I'd just like to know why source runs so poorly

Again to my point, disable the onboard sound and run the game to see how it performs. If you see a speed increase, buy a card. Also try running 2 sticks of 512 and see how performance is (unless you have 2x1gb of course)

Yeah, I have two one gig sticks. would anything else cause the severe fps loss? I mean my rig is fairly high end, i dont see why i get horrible fps in 40 man servers, I'd sure hate to see what its like in a 60 man

What kind of connection are you using Cable or DSL? I play Call of Duty 2 online and have hi-speed extreme cable (fastest non T1 connection you can get in Canada, had to buy the extreme cable modem but its been worth it) and my fps is very solid. My cousin, who is on DSL (slower, bell phone based hi-speed internet) has a lot more lag than I do. Admittedly, my computer is a bit faster, but in the single player, he can play the game fine.

I'm on comcast cable, I have a good wireless D-link card in my comp but the lag isnt the problem, i get no loss or choke in the game, the FPS is the problem and that would have something to do with the computer, mainly the video card I presume or the fact that I use onboard audio

have you attempted a game that wasn't online? I can't see why cs source would bof your system down like that just because its online. A connection acting wacky could cause many diff things.

well with my rig at stock i only get about 30-180 FPS in 40-man (full server) CS:S, the 30 is very rare, mostly in the 80s. In 20 man servers i usualy get 120+.

ur 3DMark05 is pretty low, i get 5800 on my 6800GS. u should get at least 7000+.
