Slow 1998 Gateway, need help.

Hey guys, my parents have a 1998 gateway. It had a pentium 2 i think it is 350 MHz. We recently installed nortan antivirus on it and they thought it was slower after the installation. So i thought some more ram would help. They only had 192 Mb (one 128 & one 64) at 100MHz. I got them 512 Mb of ram at 133 MHz. I think it is alittle faster but how can i tell if the ram is performing at its full potential? Also i am preaty sure if i put one of the old 100Mhz sticks in with the 133Mhz stick they both will only run at 100Mhz, am i right? I appreciate your help. If anybody has any other advise as to how to make this old girl run faster please feal free to reply thanks.

You could try running Sandra on it and see what kind of bandwidth numbers you get before and after.

I did get some info guys. I found out that with only the 512 stick i had a total memory of 256 and my FSB was only 100MHz. I thought i would try the 512 and the 128 and i still got FSB 100 Mhz but my total memory went to 384. The computer doesn't recognize that the stick is 512, it thinks the stick is only 256, and is rated at 133MHz. Can i download some drivers to fix this? Is it possible to fix this? Thanks for your help.

some older mobos were made when a stick of 256 was the biggest you could buy. If you can find a BOIS update, it could add a 512 support. But if it doesnt recognize 512, get a new PC from Tigerdirect.com for $300 or something.

I have had few gateway PII's come my way, what I suggest is drop norton, and sell that 512MB stick on Ebay and get 2 256MB models. the guy above me was right, most old computers cant run 512MB sticks....

Notron is trash, and that computer cannot run it anyway, pick up AVG 7.0 Free
