Granted SM3 wasn't really necessary when the X800 series started coming out, but ATI should've been thinking ahead, not building cards with outdated technology. I think that the new ATI cards are amazing, though. The X1900 is a fantastic card.
yes, that was exactly what iv meant, most of ATI's cards like the x800, x850XT or whatever still has SM2, the new x1000 series which came out a couple month ago has SM3.0, while nvidia's cards thats almost a couple years old has SM3

Well if he knew anything hed also know that the SM3.0 support for the GeForce6 cards is horrible and there is a huge performance hit in most games using it.

Lol, you guys are nuts. I think whoever said a 45nm card with 48 pipelines will never happen seems to forget that 8MB 1 pipeline cards were high end only a few years ago, GeForce 2 anyone? I have one of those in my Dell (MX400) and its crap compared to my GeForce 7900GTX but then again its price is like $20 now where my GTX cost $539 last month

Unofficial specs put both G80 and R600 at ~48 pipelines with either 512MB or 1024MB of GDDR3 (GDDR4 is likely, especially on the G80) and clock speeds nearing 900MHz, both are 90nm and both are supposed to support SM4 and DX10.

Vista and DX10 will ship at the same time, no you cannot upgrade a DX9 card to DX10 like you could from DX8 to DX9, there is NO built in backwards compatibility however there is a software emulation layer that comes with DX10 to run DX9 (basically you get DX9 AND DX10 but if you want to run DX10 on a DX9 card you are pretty much going to have massive overhead meaning very poor performance) so it is not a good idea to try and run DX10 games on a DX9 card, also a DX9 card can NOT utilize any of the new effects in DX10 whatever they may be. As far as I know SM4 is not backwards compatible AT ALL, I think games will be coded with SM4 and SM3 as a backup which is alright, when a card that cannot support SM3 tries to run a game that does, it reverts all the way to SM1.1 which is a pretty big step down lol.

Personally Im very happy with my 7900GTX and I'll probably get a DX10/SM4 card whenever I decide to get Vista (maybe around launch not sure yet) or if some outstanding DX10/SM4 game comes out that I absolutely have to have.....

EDIT/// This is where we were ~4-5 years ago (not sure)

This is where we are today, simply amazing

Okay so the GeForce 2 MX400 is 32MB, sue me

In most of the benchmarks I have seen 7900GTX SLI beats X1900XTX crossfire. Along with the 7900GT being the best bang for the buck, along with the 6800GS and 7600GT being very good deals.

How random this thread is going without flaming me a fanboy or anything The Nvidia G80 will be the mutz nutz over anything ATI has to offer at that period of time when it is released (june/july)..............The card itself is a bit of a mystery as Nvidia will neither confirm nor deny any rumours made however off speculations and so called leaks to the net state that it will be the first true dual core GPU, it will be SLI rdy (quad core), it is compatible with windows vista (so presumably DX10) its core speeds will be in the region on 850Mhz to 1100Mhz and Clock at 2.3 to 2.7Ghz.................Now the 7900 series which is still rather new was the main focus for the 1900's due to its release date and comparable speeds BUT it is was actually intended only as a stepping stone till the G80 release, hense the G71 over the 7800's G70 core, ATI at this moment in time dont have anything to match it at least nothing they have announced (adding to the reason of Nvidia's secrecy, rather underhanded really). I believe ATi have configured crossfire to kinda do the same thing where one card processess graphics and the other physics or something like that..............nvidia are doing it all in one

As I have said all this info is off the net so blame me for inaccuracies blame google

Sources? Even unreliable ones? How about some leaks.

Also, note the fact that ATI already has unified shader technology under their belt (see: XBox360). Whereas Nvidia has officially announced that it is not going to the technology until later. As shader technology is more and more prevalent in games today (See: Oblivion), maybe pipelines aren't the only thing that measures speed (See: ATI's massive shader count vs. Nvidias higher pipeline count). Bottom line is, the technology is going to get better and that means smoother gameplay for us. However, the facts aren't layed out in any fashion for one side or the other to "pwn" (see: PurePwnage.com). So stop with the prophecies and just let the two companies release cards and we will be the judge of quality AFTERward.

Heres a few, if you want to look into it anymore this is exactly how to do it..........

open explorer, type in the address bar www.google.com, then type in the search bar NVIDIA G80, press search
(sorry for being sarcastic, I always get this way in the early hours)
