[Phoronix] BTRFS, EXT4, & ZFS on an SSD

With the benchmarks recently looking at the performance of ZFS on FreeBSD versus EXT4/Btrfs on Linux having generated much interest and a very long discussion, this morning we are back with more benchmarks when running ZFS on FreeBSD/PC-BSD 8.1 and Btrfs and EXT4 on an Ubuntu Linux 10.10 snapshot with the most recent kernel, but this time the disk benchmarking is being done atop a high-performance solid-state drive courtesy of OCZ Technology and the CPU is an Intel Core i7. The drive being tested across these three leading file-systems is the OCZ Vertex 2 that promises maximum reads up to 285MB/s, maximum writes up to 275MB/s, and sustained writes up to 250MB/s.

EXT4 is very functional and working. I used it for my linux, I even used the beta! Though lucky for me the beta bugs never messed with my computer. =) I like EXT4 but I do wanna try btrfs! They have some amazing FS out for nix.

I just want a new file system for Windows. So slow and in efficient at this point. I was also pissed when they took ZFS out of OSX completely. At one point you could do everything with zfs except install the OS to it. Now there is no trace of it in OSX.

Enjoyed the read. Makes me want to use Linux/Ubuntu even more. I REALLY want to see a great EXT4 vs. NTFS article.

Edit: Just found an article from Phoronix with NTFS vs. EXT4 that looks decent. Surprised I haven't seen this one yet. Here it is if anyone is interested: http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1765

EXT beats NTFS hands down. After EXT3 the fragmentation of files is almost nil and you won't ever hear MS talk about the truth behind NTFS and fragmentation.

The ONLY major thing NTFS offers over EXT3 and some of the other FS is security called ACL. This can be done in linux as well, here is a post on it for EXT4:
http://www.nuxified.org/blog/acls_ex...ilepermissions

I just did a quick Google search so blarg! Either way NTFS NEEDS TO BE CHANGED!!! I know they talk of winfs but I doubt it would still compete with some of the FS Linux can use.

I can honestly say I would be very happy if Windows adopted the idea to allow outside file systems and let people choose how they want to store their data.

I would be too, but I'm sure it's breaking the GPL (or whatever license EXT4, btrfs, et cetera use) by adding in support with a paid OS. Maybe they could have as a free download, but then you couldn't install with it unless you cooked your own install disc with it on...

Dang. This is a fantastic read. It really puts the tangible benefits of a SSD into perspective. Most times when people think of a hard drive they just want something that works, but this is easy to understand, thorough, and up to date for offering options and information. Good read.

We should show these to the masses...

No, if they allow the user the choice to do it with no extra cost there is no break in the GPL. All GPL really does is make sure people don't take GPL licensed code and sell it, you can make proprietiary software that uses GPL code as long as you make sure it's documented what code is GPL and how you used it.

Apple is a good example of this, they allow various GPL FS too be used and accessed under their OS without breaking any GPL license.

[edit] You can't install OSX into a non-HFS volume drive as I see it but that doesn't mean you can't mount another volume inside OSX and use it. Sorry I guess I should clarify better, I have issues with that LOL

I'm sure you could find a way though to hack OSX to run outside of HFS but I haven't seen that done as of yet.

[edit2] Just remembered, OSX can use FAT32 and can also use the open version of FAT32 which is licensed under GPL now I believe? I think so, this would prove that you can use GPL and be legally safe.
