Case finishing...

Hello again,
Basically, I want to sand my case down to the aluminum base, i have this case, http://www.surpluscomputers.com/stor...&item=ACC10618
ya, I know its crap, but i had to save money at the time. I am looking for the brushed aluminum look, or even just the metal, but I want it to be "uber" shiny. lol. So, right now, i've got the following wet/dry sand papers. 150, 260, 400, 600. I've also got some ancient heavy duty rubbing compound. I tried doing something on the inside of the case first, in a small area, but it didn't come out that shiny, and you can still see scratches even after 3 rubbing compound applications. Do i need a finer rubbin compound or what? Any advice as to go about this would be awesome.
Thanks,
Jon

I'll just act like you're lapping your case here: are you using a glass block or something similarly extremely smooth to sand with? Or just fingers...? It isn't clear.

I think 1000grit and above would do well in the end, but let's get around to perfection at 600grit.

In reply to ouroboros1827, I am just using my fingers, with the side panel on a flat surface. As for the other site, I've seen that already, but that's more prep work and focus on the paint. I think ouroboros1827 got my idead better, Simply trying to sand then lap my case. Interesting way to put it too.

Well, What do you want to do exactly? Get a mirror finish? Or just have a nice base to put on some paint?

Do you want a polished mirror like finish? Or do you want the brushed AL finish look? and is your case aluminum or steel? if its steel you will have to spray a clear coat of some sort after you ore done sanding and everything or it will rust.
For a high polish/mirror look you will need much more than 600 grit paper, youll need in excess of 1500grit if not more than 2000, then you can start to use the compound. you will need a sanding block to make sure its evenly sanding, and LOTS of time and patience!!!! this will take a LONG time to do this by hand, youll have to work your way from 400grit after you get the paint off, all the way past 2000grit paper wet sanding, than maybe a buffer wheel and polish compound from a auto parts store(witch is where youll have to get the ultra fine sandpaper too)
