939 Opteron 146 *CACJE*0604 Any Good ????

Hi ,

This is my 1st serious post about jumping on the OC`ing Bandwagon. Iv`e got a few questions that i am sure you knowledgable people can answer

I was thinking of buying a Opteron 146 CACJE0604 (San Diego, £156) and using it with my newly aquired MSI K8N Neo2 Motherboard.

What memory should i buy bearing in mind iv`e only got £200 to spend on it ? I was thinking of the Corsair® 1024MB TwinX XMS 3200XL X-Treme Low Latency Memory Kit or Corsair® 1024MB TwinX XMS 4000 Memory Kit (2 x 512MB). Which is best and most suited to my potential setup ????

What overclocks can i attain if i buy this " CACJE " Opteron using my Asetek Vapochill Micro Extreme if this WILL overclock at all ?

Thanks.

EDIT:

This present system will be used as a server, when the New one is decided and up and running.

What do you mean Opteron "San Diego"? Opteron cores are Venus. Anyway, yes, the CACJE is one of the better OCers from the opteron family. I believe some people around here have their's running at above 3.0 on water, so phase you could see probably around 3.2-3.4 is my guess.

Edit\\\\ As for memory, latency isn't the priority, but the speed is. You can run a bit loose on the latency as long as you get high mhz in return. If you have high memory, then you can run your FSB and mem speed at 1:1 ratio, which gives superior performance.

wow, i looked up reviews on the Asetek Vapochill Micro Extreme that you have and it looks like it performs as well as my Big Typhoon

as for memory, TCCDs. since you seem like u want a 1gb kit, i would recommend these kits:

OCZ EL Platinum Revision 2 1GB
G.SKILL Extreme Series 1GB

also Geil Ones if you can find them. those are the only ones i can think of off the top of my head. you can also refer to this list. i believe Winbond BH-5's are pretty good too.

You may want to consider getting higher frequency RAM if overclocking, just to have some extra headroom. PC4000 comes to mind. Also, look for low latencies since these are important (performance wise) for these CPUs. I would recommend getting a 2x1Gb since you can get decent pairs for fairly cheap now, but 2x512MB is not bad either. If you do decide to go the 2x512MB route let me recommend these two sets:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820144517
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820148009

Edit: TCCD/TCC5 is a particular chip used for RAM. They are notorious for being able to achieve high overclocks at fairly low voltage (2.8-2.9V)

You might want to reconsider purchasing the Opteron series. There are few that have had success with phase, but the Opteron's in general do not like the extremely cool temperatures. I forget what exactly you phase change people call it, something like a "cold bug" or something of that sort that some have experienced with the Opterons. I remember reading a post in this forum where a guy could only overclock a 146 to 2.2GHz, HERE. People do way better then that on air. At the very least please look into this further so you do not get yourself something that will not suit your needs.

The Asetek Vapichill Micro Extreme is NOT a fully loaded Phase Change cooling setup where you can goto -40c. It`s like a normal CPU Cooler But with a element of Phase Change cooling built into it. Below is a Link to a Review of it.

http://www.techniz.co.uk/modules.php...content&id=281

I expect the normal operating Temp to be 20+ Centigrade lower than using a stock AMD CPU heat sink & Fan that ships with the retail version.

So is the following memory the best for my project:

Geil Ultra-X PC4400 550MHz CL2.5 7-4-4 DDR ???
mushkin XP4400 Dual Pack 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 550 (PC 4400) ????
GeIL Ultra 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 500 (PC 4000) ????

Anyone else care to throw some more Modules into the mix and i need some serious recommendations as i`ll be buying some in just over a week.

thanks

You might want to consider getting a 2x1GB kit if you are considering the DDR500. This G-Skill has yielding some nice results for overclockers. Some get it to about DDR540 or a little higher.

Both DDR550 kits look nice and you should be able to get a little tighter timings with the 512MB modules. Tough choice indeed, but if you are going to do some extreme overclocking the DDR550 may be the better option for you.

A nice OC of about 2.8-9GHZ will do for me tbh. I found a supplier that will sell me that G-Skill 2x1GB Kit for £152.69 including delivery in the UK. i understand i can get it from the USA for a cheaper price and shipped for $20 but then i got 19.5% TAX on the import of the goods So i will only save about £10 or $18 !!!

I have the same mobo and i tell ya that its one hell of a stable board.. Even for my 2.75ghz suicide run, tried real tight timings on high ram frequencies, had the HTT at over 1200mhz... tried real tight timings on high ram frequencies with MUCH too little Vdimm... ive never had to reset my CMOS, because its one hell of a reliable board When you reach the stage where you wish to overclock, give me a little PM and i can help you with hints and stuff about this mobo... theres alot to it that needs tweaking.

As for the processor, it will do you good. Very overclockable. As for the ram, i would suggest 2gb. Maybe PC4000. See if you can find Crucial Ballistix PC4000 Tracer 2gb kit in your local pc store(s). Highly reccomended for overclocking and supreme stability. I Think its timings were 2.5-3-3-6 which is very good for a 2gb set at PC4000.
