Seems like a good set-up. Going well above the 4.0ghz mark with that 920.

It gets the seal of approval.

I'm going to be sad to inform you that Conroe will not work on any current motherboards afaik. The chipset will work, but other parts on the motherboard are designed for pumping out higher voltage. I was ready to make the jump for the 975x chipset motherboard that you have, but until i get a definete answer, I'm not planning on it. You should plan to be dissapointed.

proof here that Conroe will not work with any current motherboards (second to last paragraph)......http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060217-6211.html

Thanks Nasgul.

selectodude and Fatal05,
I've been following the news on the possible compatibility with Conroe. here
So chances are that the P5WD2-E Premium will be compatible through BIOS updates and/or minor board mods. And if that doesn't happen, I'll just buy a new mobo in 9-12 months, no big deal.
I need an upgraded system regardless and my current rig is obsolete and the X2s are soon to be obsolete. So building this rig is the safest bet.
Thanks for your concern though and I appreciate you bringing it up since it would be a factor if I wasn't already aware of the situation.

If the Conroe won't work on the 975X, then how did Intel get their Conroe to work on a 975X??? You are misinformed. The Conroe will clearly work on 975X, the issues are software not hardware.

Your build looks strangly familiar! , you are building almost the exact same computer as mine.

They're using a different motherboard. The 975x chipset works fine, but something about the voltage won't work.

ASUS is the world leader in making things that Intel says can't work, work. When Intel said you can't unlock the multis, ASUS figured it out, when Intel said that you can't use DDR2-800 on certain chipsets, ASUS got them to work....

That does look like a great system man.

Bottom line on Conroe on 975, no one will no for sure until we get the chip in out hot little hands, but I would be suprised if a simple BIOS update doesn;t have Conroe right at home on a P5WD2-E-Premium.

If any board is lkely to be compatible with conroe that would be the one IMO. Asus is my first choice regardless of build. Great selection of gear--looks top notch and well thought out--the pricing looks right too. Nice WB good-sized case with plenty of expandability (like room for a pelt set up later on...)

Good luck on future-proofing anything, though. Chances of building something today that will be anywhere near cutting edge in a year is slim--the technology is advancing so rapidly.
