New Presler rig: Comments/suggestions please - Page 4

Yes, CrossFire is your best bet but I would (and did) get a P5WD2-E Premium and a single 7900GTX. A single 7900GT would still do you fine in any game, even Oblivion and the extra CPU horsepower you get when these Preslers are overclocked is more beneficial than SLI graphics cards considering that they are alread severely CPU bottlenecked anyways. At 4.05 a Presler beats an FX60 (see my thread on the subject) and mine's at 4.2 pending heat issues (I was planning a water cooling setup but my parents 'freezed my assets' lol) so I decided to drop the voltage to 1.400 and back off my overclock to 4.13 and see if I can get upgraded cooling but my point is, at 4.2GHz in AM3 I get a 20,000 GPU score and a 12,000 CPU score to give you an idea of what I mean by a CPU bottleneck lol, that's pretty severe.

One may be able to OC the X1900XT to the same or higher performance but the 7900GT is cheaper and the OCed lvl of performance shown in that article should be just fine for me. Besides, I've got a masters degree in electrical engineering, so soldering and playing with circuits is fun for me!

There are few things worse in the world then waiting for shipping. I imagine hell to give you $5000 for anything you want on newegg.com, and eternal shipping!

Looks like you made some great choices. Your money was well spent.

Good thing you got the PNY 7900GT, seems like EVGA got a bad batch of them, and the memory is bad on a ton of the 7900GT. They want me to RMA it, so off it goes.

Still waiting on the Video card. I've been making the shroud for the heater core out of sheetmetal. I just need to make a few adjustments to it, cut out the fan holes, and spray paint it with some Rustoleum or the like. I should have just bought one though... lol. I also took the 4-in-3 HDD bay from my stacker and made it into a rear HDD bay, mounting it in the top rear corner. I'll have to post the procedure in the Case Mods forum. The printer is busted so it's going back to Newegg today. That's all the news for now.
