Oblivion on a x850XT

Thread Starter
I just ran oblivion on my x850XT and i get fairly bad fps w/ things on high. I have to turn off most things or lower them for it to be decent. The grass has to be off and so on...

Are there any special made ati drivers to support it better? Or has ati done what they do best and be sluggish w/ the drivers?

No you just need to know how to set it up properly, what resolution are you running it at?

Also, if you want grass at more then 35% draw distance or so, use the .ini file tweak that reduce the variety of different grass types and spreads them out a bit, but then you can set it to 100% draw distance, and it looks practically the same.

My system is simmilar then yours, just a better CPU (AMD64 3500+), but Oblivion is almost entirely dependent on the video card.

At 1024x768 with all shadow options turned off and with my grass tweak, and everything else on max (draw distance, distance lands, everything) it runs silky smooth everywhere, unless theres more then 4 or so enemies on screen at once.

I average about 20-25 FPS when I'm outside, sometimes even more. Inside I get 40+, sometimes even up to 70 or so. I'm running at 1280x1024 with no AA (I run well with 6x AA but combat locks up with AA so I can't turn it on), I have grass distance on full (I've done nothing to the ini, its normal density) and View Distance on full. Overall, I'm very happy.

Try using the Omega drivers. http://www.omegadrivers.net/
They give me a large performance boost in all other games hopefully they work the same for Oblivion.

I found something for NVidia users w/ gfs 6###. Here it is. I'm not possitive it works so try at your own risk.

"1. Download and install the latest NVIDIA ForceWare drivers.
2. Download and install the "Coolbits" registry tweak:
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=815
(To install, unzip then double-click the .reg file to apply the registry mod)
3. Go to Control Panel -> Display -> Settings tab -> Advanced -> GeForce XXXX (your card model)
4. Expand "Performance & Quality Settings"
5. Click on "Additional Direct3D Settings"
6. Change "Max Frames to render ahead" from 3 to 0.
7. Click "Apply" then "OK" to exit the settings page."

I have an X800XT and its clocked at 540/540. It seems to bench very similar to your card and I have settings on high, but distances down a bit. I also made sure to edit the INI to allow me to use 1gb of memory, not the 256 that it originally allocates.

I get 30s everywhere and 60s indoors after some tweaks to the INI (lowering grass density for one) but during battles it really crunches, sometimes into the teens. However, its at 1600x1200 because of my monitor. *shrug*
