Oblivion on a x850XT - Page 3

No offence, but refusing to play a game because your PC can't run it above 50 FPS is a bit silly. If it is really that big of a deal to you, just turn down the settings. You don't have to run everything at max. Some of us can't run anything at max.

Wow you guys are as snobbish as it gets!

This is one of the best games I've ever played in any way, and I would still love it if I had to set everything to minimum, I just wouldn't enjoy the visuals as much.

I'm now playing at 1280x1024 with my grass tweak and all outdoor shadow options off, I've also noticed that turning specular distance all the way off makes practically no difference visually, and improves the fps nicely outdoors, everything else maxed. (note, I had to resart the game afterwards to see the improvment)

The only time I notice any FPS drop at all is with 4 or more AI charcters close by, but I don't care.

My buddy plays with his 9600xt 512mb ram p4 2.6ghz on 800x600 medium settings, and he loves it just as much.

All you people crying and ditching the game because of FPS need to grow up and learn how to tweak the game to what your system can handle, you've forgotten what a good game is about, and theres a great one just under your nose.

What fps are you getting? What settings beside the "max". Distance? AA? AF?
How did you do the grass tweak? If i can do 40 fps id play gladly but 30 fps is too choppy.

I was able to stabilize the game and fix smoothness except now I have this reflextion problem. It looks like the reflextions on the blade seem to go to the right and left of the blade. Weird but it runs a lot smoother.

Having played it with both an x1900XT and X850XT, sure the 1900 runs it like a dream, but the 850XT runs it quite well, also.

I haven't measured the actual FPS, but silky smooth is what I see and feel and thats good enough for me.

Also almost forgot, your probably using FRAPS to measure the FPS right? You realize the program itself takes a hit on your FPS performance.

Heres some settings you can try that I have confirmed to run smooth on my system.

1280x1024
all fade distances set at the middle except
draw distance maxed out with all distant land options ON
use grass tweak to have full draw distance but less packed and good FPS
all outdoor shadow options off (sucks FPS and can hardly be noticed)
specular distance all the way off (I implore you to notice any difference)
bloom on
all water options on and maxed

Don't think I missed anything. At these settings I get no FPS drops at all, load times are great, and the visuals are practically the same as if they were all maxed, trust me compare them yourself.

If you really spend time with it, you can even increase some more of the fade distances like trees, but it hardly even makes a noticeable difference.

For trees, it just decides how far away the trees turn into a 2D instead of 3D, once they're not near you though they look the exact same.

Actor fade at the middle is still pretty darn far, I never notice any fadeing actors in cities at all, only when I've seen an NPC running away in the outdoors off into the distance.

Cause I've explained it like 20 times already, tired of explaining it every time I mention the grass tweak, since it is paramount in getting a good frame rate in the outdoor enviroments with grass on with a good draw distance.

Gotta alter the game's Oblivion.ini file in the My Games folder, under grass you need to alter couple of the lines. Can PM me if you can't find out wat to do yourself.
