According to this you can face a criminal charge so yes it's illegal. In this case it was 3rd degree felony.

The charge, unauthorized access to a computer network, applies to all varieties of computer network breaches, and gives prosecutors considerable leeway depending on the severity. It carries a potential sentence ranging from probation to 5 years in prison.

How is it hard to understand? Using someone elses service without permission is illegal in the US. Just like driving someone's car without their permission can be considered grand theft auto if they choose to press charges.

I never said I didn't understand the law.

I also never specified to that of which your detailing.

Lastly, stealing a car is alot different to piggybacking someone's Wifi.

Assume away.

We should try to keep this on topic, and for arguments sake we'll say that using unsecured wi-fi is illegal. Better safe than sorry, right?

except in this case since your unsecured wireless network is broadcasting itself into my living room, it would be like you coming into my house, sitting your hose down in front of me and then expecting me not to use it...then pressing charges against me when i do
