Abnormal CPU Temps?

Thread Starter
I am new to the whole overclocking scene but I would like to get into it...

I bought an AMD 64 3700+ processor with a San Diego core because of the reviews of the great overclockability. When I look at the review, I notice something... that all of their idle temps are around 23/25 degrees celsius.. with stock cooling.

My idle temps with stock cooling were around 31 degrees celsius...So... thinking something was wrong I went ahead and applied some Arctic Silver 5 Thermal compound... no change in temps at all...

Is something wrong here? Did I just get a "bad" processor out of the batch?

Thanks for any help.

two things:

AS5 takes 50-200 hours before you will notice the temp diff, it takes some time before it gets kickin in.

The second thing is that there might be crappy airflow in your PC. 25/27C is anyways pretty low, i got 32 with my stock cooler on this processor. Remember that your fan, on the boxed cooler is taking air from your case. If your case is at 28C then your cpu wont get much colder than 31C.

EDIT: And idle temps dont really matter. Its the load temps that you should worry about. As long as load temps dont exceed 55C then everything should be ok.

Welcome to the forum!

As Timmay said, idle temps are not a big problem, its more of load temps.

Here are some links to help get you started overclocking.

BTW, you will want to fill out your rig specs found in your user pc, so we can further help you in your overclocking experience.

Hm... well, after reading the whole tutorial here on overclocking AMD processors... it looks like any overclocking that I will do will be fruitless. Due to the fact that my memory is PC3200, meaning it runs at 200Mghz... Which is also the default setting for my processor...

Am I correct in saying that all overclocking I do will be fruitless due to my memory?

No, the 3700+ Sandiegos are known to overclock very well. Since you have value ram like me, you could just set a divider on the ram so that it runs on stock speed while the processor is running at your desired overclocked speed. I know how value ram can be, my geil is extremely picky and i dont give a **** about what it wants i just run a divider to keep it at approximately 200mhz. Although overclocking my cpu from 2ghz to 2.5ghz has helped my performance alot, and i would suggest, since you have a processor known for great overclockability that you overclock that baby and keep your ram at stock, for now
