The only situation where you don't need a master card for crossfire is with the new xpress 3200 chipset and that still won't do it until the next catalyst release...

& afaik even then X1900s will need the dongle (X1800s won't)

btw newegg has the Abit AT8 RD480 Crossfire board back in stock which imo is better than the A8R-MVP

Thread Starter
great input from everyone. Oh and dehx, did u read my first post on this issue. It is ATi themed and my wallet is cryin as it is. Cant go wth the 1900 series cards. Well I already built it. Let me tell you guys what I got in it now. MSI RD480 Neo2-FI mobo with a 3700 sandy core at 2.8 ghz ocd. Two ATi x1600 pros, ATi TV tuner pro with remote, Dynex 5.1 suround sound card, and 4 GB of pc 3200 crucial ram. And the best part is I only paid 510 dollars. I got the 4 gb of ram on ebay for less that 100.00 dollars and got the 3700 out of a HP puter that was going to be tossed due to a fried mobo. Neighbor does not know too much bout puters and toasted his HP. Ram, DVD, PSU, CPU, were salvaged for 50.00 dollars from him. WHAT A DEAL!!! All this and less than what a X1900XTX would run me. Very satisfied with my backup computer. Now for my next project. SLi. What graphics cards do you guys recommend that are pretty much the same as the x1600s I got so I can do some comparing. And should I go Intel this time?
