Maybe the LED wire supplied the ground to short out the fire wire or something is jumping the PC board like a careless drip of solder during manufacturing?

I smelled something burnt when I first started up my cnew computer, but didnt think any more of it because it worked. will my computer work without this chip?
this looks like it could turn into a very common problem.....

I looked under mine, and while not broken could become so very easily they are very sandwiched together.

I threw some electrical tape around the wires and over top of them and called it a day.

Thank you to everyone in this thread!

Only wish I had saw it sooner, I already RMA'd my Asus Rampage III Extreme and I had no Idea really what had happened.

The Computer had been running fine for a month, then started shutting off randomly, and even when you put a USB in the front it would sometimes shutdown. I checked all my standoffs and thought there were no shorts at all. Then the Board would not POST at all.

I received my new one today, good support from asus only took 3 days (Advanced RMA).

I hooked everything back up and immediatly smelled burning.
I Googled and came upon this thread and sure enough... My VIA chip is a little browned lol.

I don't know if the firewire still works or not. I Just disconnected all the front panel connectors for now and the chip isnt burning hot anymore. Issue Solved... Thank God. I don't use firewire so hopefully everything else is still okay, computer seems to be running fine right now.

Just hope Asus Doesnt charge me a fee now for the burned chip on the first one. :/

Again, Thank you... you have saved me from possibly spending alot more money and burning more boards... without having a clue what is wrong.

+rep, epic service.

I only wish Antec did this sort of thing; not that my case is likely to have this error, but it'd be nice if I had this outstanding service to fall back on.

Good work fella.

Talked to Marvin in the CM chat today, very helpful. CM is looking into paying any damage fees as long as I can provide some proof. Pictures, and A Technical Report from Asus, Hopefully asus can give me something like that, if not all i can provide is pictures of the second board, as i already sent the first back for the advanced RMA.

Still waiting on Asus to receive the first board back should be in 2 days...(Hopefully they wont charge my card) And then I will see about RMAing the second board that was damaged.

Also was told to put a part request in for the front panel which i will do tonight.

Hopefully everything works out but this is such a hassel.

I'll Keep you all updated if any other googles happen to come upon this topic.
