But how long will it be before software can take advantage of 4 cores? Very few programs nowadays support dual core, so most of that raw power would go to waste. Although playing BF2, FEAR, Far Cry, and COD2 at the same time would be amusing.
Even without multicore application support there is a significant increase in computer performance. Your OS, virus scanner, overclocking programs, ect run on the second core, freeing an entire core for your game. I suppose that 4 core wouldn't be much better than 2 core until mutli core support is out, but it should not be long.

True, but it still seems like a bit of a waste. If software were coded to thread through all 4 cores, CPU usage wouldn't go above like 35% with any app out there right now...

I'll wait for AMD's quad core, but good luck to all you future Conroe/this thing owners.

Don't get excited until its available. I doubt it will be available to buy when they say it will. Would be nice if it was, it would link up nicely to Vista for people buying new PCs based around it. Boost MS a little after they fail to catch the Christmas market. Only nVidia has managed to have all their products on sale when they say they will recently ATi is getting there, they were pretty good with the X1900, MS delays, OCZ haven't even mentioned the CryoZ and Ageia (sp?) have only just started to trickle out the physics processors were raving about so long ago. Don't trust deadlines

SOme1 mentioned running that Quad core CPu with a Quad SLi setup... That would NEED a minimum of 2x 600w PSU's. There are very few PSU's that can support Quad SLi, let alone that with a quad core cpu.

Me thinks that either: A - 1000w+ PSU's will become standar on gaming rigs
or B - Dual PSU's will become standard.

Either way, things are getting alot more power hungry.

EVery1 seems to have thgis thing now where if you cant get a faster core, just add another 1 on.

(SLi, Quad SLi, Dual cores and now Quad Cores!)

Quadruple SLi any1?

I heard there's gonna be an AMD quad or 8 core coming out about the same time, but I'm not trying to come across as a complete fanboi, so I won't make a big deal of it. This shouldn't be too suprising or alarming, since instead of pumping clock speeds, they have to increase the amount of cores due to physical limitaitons and heat issues.

I would expect 16 core chips to be mainstream in 5 years.

16 core chips on a quad CPU server board =64 cores...with Octi-SLi!!!! and a dual 1000W PSU with modular plugs bridged together and a phase change...this will be my future build.

considering Intels cheap way of ripping people off with rediculously low L1 Cache sizes i wouldnt be very excited. Much rather wait for some real deal with AM2 FX62 and such
