amd 3800+ or opteron 170?

Thread Starter
so heres the deal:

i can get a cheap 3800+ or wait to get the opty 170. would the extra 512mb cache make that big of a difference? im an opteron fanboy, but the price is too good to pass up!

any comments?

170 opty all the way. Not only is dual core the future you get the extra cache and probably overall better clockspeed in the end.

the 170 will probably clock a bit higher and ultimately give you better performance as it has 2x the cache... but if you can get a really good deal on the 3800+ I might be tempted to go that route. many of the 3800+'s have been OC'ing quite well and make a great dual core budget cpu

i say the 3800+ there really isnt that big of a difference with the extra cache. And didnt they stop making socket 939 opterons? Why buy an obsolete processor

obsolete? oh boy. these things are selling like hot cakes because of their high overclock ability

and i was talking about the 3800+ dual core

ah....forget it. i think i finally got my computer stable @ 3.0

i just built this in january and id rather wait for a price drop and the opty 148s to become rare so i can ebay it and get the 175 instead. i love the 11x multiplier

Definitely get the 170 over the x2. The optys are overclocking higher on less voltage and with less heat than the x2's and in this case, the difference in l2 cache will make widen the performance gap.....Think....3700+ sandy vs 3500+ venice.

dont start the whole opty's are god crap again i havent seen a thread like that in a while dont bring the fanboyism back. There is no solid proof with thatthey are better overclockers. And dont fire back with a comment saying OMG your soooo wrong there is lots of proof blah blah blah i wont respond

You should be careful who you make your generalizations towards, you are saying this to a person who recently posted:

Don't expect any amd dual core but an fx60 to hit 3ghz w/o ridiculous cooling...

But back to the original post, the opty 165 or the opty 170 (because of the 10X multi) are the best dual cores to buy (under the fx60 of course). Most reach 2.6-2.7 and some go higher, along with the 2 X 1mb L2 cache, there's no need in paying any more for another amd dual core (except fx60) being they won't oc any higher than those two chips. Plus, the opty won't need as much vcore in the process, thus you don't have to worry about the vcore limit of a lot of motherboards.
It's general knowledge that opty 165's will OC at least to 2.6ghz, generally with 1.5V or less. It's also general knowlegde that X2's run very hot, and are power hungry....would you even attempt at overclocking one without raising the vcore? Now, considering this, your 3800+x2 and 165 will have similar overclocks, but, the opty, will most likely be doing it with less voltage, less heat, while having twice the L2 cache. It should be obvious what the best choice would be.

On top of this, if he wouldn't have already invested in great ddr ram and a nice amd mb, i would have actually recommended a pressler as they are really overclocking much better than athlon dual cores.

Mine did overclock to 2610...but not with my new (better) psu. Now that I have the new heatsink I"m hoping it will again...but you can't say that. "at least 2.6"...that's just not correct. I've seen guys that can't get past 2.4

EDIT: Holy crap! I didn't even notice my 1000th post! 33 posts over, and I never noticed...haha Sweet.
