KASPERSKY ANTIVIRUS and ANTIHACKER
I have been using them for a couple of years without any drama's.
They are easy to configure and update with regular updates every three hours or sooner in case of outbreaks.. They don't cause the system to be taxed and can be purchased online cheaply.

I use:

1. Norton AV Corp edition 8 - This allows me to have a central server to push updates from and as the clients run quietly in the background, only minimal resources are used. ~15MB of memory unless a scan is running, then it's ~30MB. The server app has one click updating and NEVER goes down on Win 2k3 Server.

2. Windows Defender - Uses little resources also and is exceptionally good at catching things such as registry changes and files being set to execute on startup.

3. Spybot S&D - Free, small, and effective.

4. AdAware SE - In the event something gets missed by the aboce 2 (which has only happend once so far) I run this and problem solved.

Of course with the amounts of RAM most of us use, Norton hogging resources really isn't a big deal. I have Systemworks on my father's PC and with 1GB of RAM, it's really a non-issue.

Anyone using Norton or Mcafee should be shot. Why not just go ahead and sign up with AOL?

There is no choice - free software Avast and AVG are pretty good, if you are paying then Nod32 is unbeatable

why should we be shot!?!?

I use Norton systemworks on my rig because I like all the added features that you can't get on a free utility. MY machine is fast enough and w/ 2gb of RAM I hardly notice norton slowing anything down. and I didn't pay for my copy of Norton. All you have to do is watch for rebates. Often you can get Norton and Mcafee for free after rebates or for very little. Just a couple weeks ago buy.com had a 3 pack of Norton 2006 for $15 after rebate. free shipping and no tax. My parents ordered it and they're giving me one of them and I'll install it either on my wife's lappy or my HTPC
