Announcements:

[8-12-11] To those who are unaware, this computer is not being built in a traditional style by any means. This is a perpetual project in which parts are constantly being switched out and updated every few months or so. Although this means it will almost always be up to date, please do not expect to see a "finished" product neatly organized inside a case. I may or may not get to it depending on time constraints.

Updates:

IN THE PROCESS OF RE-DOING / UPDATING FIRST POST

-For those of you who don't know this thread was mistakenly deleted 4 months ago. After sending over 30 PM's to OCN staff related to getting this thread back... Here it is.

-Added "To Do" list

-OCZ Agility 3 SSD's arrived!

-Pricing Updated Again

-SR-2 and GTX 580's Arrived!

-Added Q&A, please read.

Changes in the Build Plan:

*Prices are according to MSRP

EVGA SR-2: ~$600

SR-2 Water Block for Sub-Zero Chilled Water Cooling (chilled water cooler specs at the bottom): ~$150

Dual 6 core X5680's (3.3Ghz ~$3650

Dual Evaperator Cascade (Phase Change) ~$1700?

48GB G.skill RAM ~$2900

RAM Waterblocks for Chilled Water Cooling ~$500

EVGA GTX 580 SSC Quad-SLI: ~$2100

GPU Water Blocks for Chilled Water Cooling: ~$550

Modded Corsair 800D: ~$500

Intel RSBL2080 RAID Card: ~$750

8x OCZ Vertex SSD's: ~$1000

5x OCZ Agility 3 SSD's: ~$800

6x 1TB 7200RPM HDD's: ~$500

3x 10k RPM HDD: ~$310

SCSI RAID Card ~$280

4x Dell U2311H Monitors: ~$1450

Acer H243H Monitor: ~$230

Dell U2410 Monitor: ~$550

Pioneer 50" Professional Studio Monitor: ~$3975

2x Self Built Projectors: ~$2100

Asus Xonar Essence STX ~$210

AKG K702 Professional Headphones: ~$375

Pioneer Blu-Ray Read/write ~$220

(New) Chilled Water Cooler and Water cooling accessories:

2x 10,000BTU Window Air Conditioners Chilling the water: ~$800

2x MO-RA 3 Radiator (9x 120mm) ~$600

Denatured Ethanol (instead of water so it can be chilled to sub-zero temps) ~ $150

Other Chilled Water Cooling Accessories: ~$95

Aesthetics / Lighting / Case Modding ~$175

And since Everything will be under Phase Change or Chilled Water Cooling, there won't be a need for any fans whatsoever inside the Case! This means almost 100% silence

And for those who are wondering, I have done hundreds of hours of research involving the components of this build, and I am very confident about my choices on the components. Please be sure you really know what you are talking about before criticizing (constructively, of course).

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Total Cost:

~ $28,000

--------------------------------------------------------------------
New Section!

Current Plans and Goals

-The OS disk and SSD's/HDD's:

1. Get a 2nd 8 port RAID card and connect 5 OCZ Agility 3 SSD's to each (in RAID 0). Use Built in Win7 Software RAID 0 to RAID both of the cards.

Unfortunately windows does not natively allow you to boot from a dynamic disk (which is necessary for software RAID) due to missing MBR information. I may be able to accomplish this task by recreating the MBR of the RAID'd RAID cards via a VM on a isolated VHD that is present on the dynamic disk.

Predicted Result and Goal: A world record breaking 4000MB/s sequential read/write

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

-The Cooling System:

I have done hundreds of hours of research in order to find an extreme 24/7 cooling solution for all of the components in this build - From GPU's to RAM to RAID cards. I have come up with many viable systems that can cool everything to sub zero temps and each has a different balance of maintaining a low noise level, relatively low power consumption, small size, and low cost.

Here are some of my ideas that I'd like to hear your opinion on:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q&A: - The most commonly asked questions:

1. What the heck are you going to do with all this?

The studio that I am a part of has recently bought these extremely High-end video cameras that film in 6k resolution (that's the equivalent of more than 10 1080p videos combined) and I am now required to edit the footage and produce a decent looking video that includes things like 3D animations and complex video effects. I have been using a 2.4Ghz Dual core (Dell Studio XPS 16) laptop to edit the 1080p footage that was handed to me, and that was already a tedious task. At one point it took almost 4 days to render just 2 minutes of footage on this laptop, and that is clearly unacceptable for practical use. My solution to this problem was to build an extremely powerful desktop that would be able to easy handle having more than 10 Video-editing related apps open at the same time while rendering a final composition of the footage.

Here's an example of what I'm doing right now:

That's 716 tabs open in Firefox.

I am also going to be folding quite a bit on this rig.

2. Why didn't you just buy a car?

I'm not old enough to drive yet

Besides, Computers > Cars...
Computers don't have speed limits.

3. Where in the world did you get $28k?

There are a couple reasons contributing to how I was able to afford this. First, I didn't actually spend $28k. That's just what this computer is worth and what the component's sell for on sites like Newegg. I've been hanging around the OCN online deals section for a while and a basically got some sort of a discount or coupon for every single component in this build. The other reason is that through winning California State Engineering and Science fairs, companies like Intel and EVGA have agreed to send me some of their products for purposes of review. In addition to that, I have also been working as an IT administrator for a Real-Estate company for a few months now, and also have custom built a few high-end gaming computers and servers for customers. Lastly, companies have been very interested in buying some of my tech related patents, which has been very helpful.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Intel 6-core Xeon X5680's have finally arrived!

The new RAID card:

And the SR-2 / 3 GTX 580 SSC's!

5 of the Vertex 3 SSD's:

8 Vertex 2 SSD's:

The new HX1000W PSU has arrived from RMA:

The TR-2 500W:

Will Post Pic of Antec 1200W PSU (HCP-1200), monitors, and other components soon.

Here is the current state of the computer in a temporary benching style setup:

Some benching Previews:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For those who don't know, the build originally started out as a less powerful Rampage III Extreme / 980x build (for the first ~30 pages of posts).

That 24GB of RAM is going to kill your overclock. Looks like this is your first major build? Have fun.

8 SSDs is waaaay overkill for your setup. You can send me 6 of them to me and that leaves you enough for two to RAID.

yeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrr rrrrr

overkill in style

but for such an average build might as well go with such an average psu - seasonic 1200w - so so average

btw do you intend to challenge NASA for space control supremacy?

Thanks! 8 SSD's is actually not even fast enough for what I'm doing. I basically have to edit 3 streams of uncompressed 6k video at once. It adds up to being around 2500MB/s - that's why I bought the 3 10k RPM drives

If you were willing to spend this much why not shell out a little more for a SR2 build. 24 threads would sure as hell help with editing.
