That's expected.

The multi-threaded Cinebench tests revolve around more cores for the most part.

But if he saw benches of 980X vs dual Xeons in the software he uses, and the performance increase wasn't huge, spending another grand(a little more actually) isn't really worth it.

I'm sorry I didn't clarify on the 980x vs dual xeons. I meant that it will give only a 5% increase on video editing applications (Premiere Pro CS5). In cinebench dual xeons definitely score better since it's basically testing only raw cpu processing power with disregard to all other components. I do however, use the program "Cinema 4D" once in a while (cinebench is based off of Cinema 4D), and the difference in real world performance of 3D objects in Cinema 4D between the 980x and dual hexacores is only about 10%, since the GPU acceleration, RAM, and HDD's come in to play. In other words, cinebench is really just another cpu only benchmark, like CPU-Z, and does not by any means reflect the difference in the real world. For example, if I were to actually render the same scene that is in Cinebench in Cinema 4D on a 980x and then a dual 6 core xeon rig, the performance difference would be very small (the rendering time would also be much, much lower on both since cinebench handicaps it to just the CPU).


Also if you check a few posts above, I said that I basically got the 980x at almost 5ghz on 1.39v which is definitely not dangerous for the cpu.

Sorry for not answering earlier, I think I saw you ask this a couple of times before and this thread was drowned in replies.

Unfortunately I am not quite sure on the exact model for the 6k cameras (haven't used it or edited it's footage yet), but I do know that they are very high-end models (obviously) that are from Sony.

We will also be using RED ONE's, 5D Mark III's (compiled 5k timelapses), and Sony EX3's

Intel says that with vcore higher than 1.40v you can possibly degrade the chip. Intel also says that temperatures that are below 5C could also possibly hurt the CPU. It wasn't designed for the cold and the slightest thermal expansion or contraction can break the silicone and the transistors.

I wrote the sticky on temperatures and voltages. Look it up and don't be sarcastic and nasty to a person who gave you good information on how not to break your $1000 CPU. Also notice I'm not the only one who said you might have a problem and need a backup.

Hey akrEAGLE, just wondering, when are you going to put the whole thing together inside the case? And what about the other 18GB of RAM? Cause I figure that the additional RAM going to force you to bring your overclock down considerably.

I am sorry if I offended you. When I made that sarcastic statement I was purposely over exaggerating and trying to play a joke on Intel, not you. I am by no means doubting your knowledge - your advice from your guides has been very helpful to me. Sorry that you took that the wrong way.

I will be putting it inside the case pretty soon, I've been stalling a bit since Intel is thinking of possibly sending me 2 ES X5650 Xeons to review (and keep), so if they do end up doing that I will probably switch to an SR-2 motherboard since it would be pretty much be the same price. Otherwise I would have 2 extra Engineering Sample Hexacore Xeons laying around and every I would see them they would wisper "build me..." .Basically I don't want to set up the whole computer in it's case only to find out a week later that I will have to take it apart completely and change out the motherboard.

Also I don't think the 24GB will hurt the OC too badly. Just put a fan on the Northbridge, raise the QPI, NB, and DRAM voltage a little, and turn down the memory multiplier and I'm pretty sure everything should be ok.

Only one way to find out. In the past it's pretty much set in stone, more RAM=Lower CPU clocks for stability. If you can pull it off I'll be impressed.
