I think my sig rig on water would do you very well with some tweaks.

Keep The phase unit for benchmarks.
- Sell the RIIIE and 980x (or return it)
- Sell the existing Ram (or return it)
+ Buy 2 24GB kits of mem (DDR3 1600 as with the XEONS it will be tough to see ~2000Mhz on ram).
+ Buy 2 X5680 Xeons
+ Buy waterblocks for the mobo, gpus, and cpus
+ Buy 2 mcp-655 pumps & 2 420/480 Rads
+ Build a custom chiller using your phase if youre itching to do it, you'll have subampient load temps on your CPU's & mobo

You'll be able to have 12 physical cores @ 4-4.5Ghz + 48GB or ram to tear through any editing/encoding/or transcoding let alone rendering tasks.

Yes but if he uses some neoprene or malleable eraser around & behind the socket , and insulate the tubing he'll be fine.

I would love to do a consumer and workstation GPU comparison, with lets say, the GTX 480 and the Quadro 4800/5800, but I don't know where I could rent one or something like that. I probably would be able to get away with buying it, benching, and then RMA'ing, but that would be pretty immoral.

If you finish your build and keep this thread w/lots of eyeballs on it you could easily write to PNY/nVidia/EVGA etc and ask them for a sample card to benchmark. They may ask for a deposit and the usual NDA / Confidetiality and other agreements but I dont think you would be turned flat down.

Thanks for the advice, I'm probably going to be doing 80% of that. Just wondering though what's wrong with my existing RAM? It's DDR3 1600mhz. Couldn't I just buy another kit of the same RAM and have it work fine in the SR-2? Also I doubt Intel would be willing to send me dual X5680's (I can't spend another $4k+ either) so if I went the dual Xeon route I would probably have to go with two X5650 or X5660's. If I do end up getting them from Intel they would also be ES chips, which I'm pretty sure have an unlocked multiplier, so I would probably be able to get a better overclock than standard X5680's, right?

I would also prefer to stick with phase (and buy another unit) or go with chilled water. Normal water would probably be a waste of potential if I have a phase cooler lying around. I'm assuming the difference between phase and chilled water would only be about 300mhz while the difference between phase and plain water would be ~1Ghz. Is that about right?

Not sure which kit you have , but the SR-2 is somewhat picky about ram so you want to work off whats confirmed as working or on the supported list.

X5650's are still good for 4+Ghz and with 12 physical cores it will tear through editing and encoding faster then a 980x.

I wouldnt run that high of an OC on a machine I intend to work on. Costs way too much to replace gear at that level and the volts and temps will eventually (sooner then you think) start degrading your chips run 24/7.

4-4.5Ghz will scream and will last far longer on traditional water. Unless you just want a benchmark machine but that didnt seem like the case.

I'm only going to be using these CPU's for about 2.5 years, do you think they will have degraded a significant amount by that point?

I pointed to this benchmark a while ago, it's for premiere pro CS5 (the program I'm using), it appears that clock speed also makes a very significant difference (at least on this editor) since the top performing computer has an i7 980x @ 4.3ghz and the second best performer has dual X5680's @4ghz: http://ppbm5.com/Benchmark5.html
