I pointed to this benchmark a while ago, it's for premiere pro CS5 (the program I'm using), it appears that clock speed also makes a very significant difference (at least on this editor) since the top performing computer has an i7 980x @ 4.3ghz and the second best performer has dual X5680's @4ghz: http://ppbm5.com/Benchmark5.html

Without knowing all the specs of those two machines its hard to make a good decision. My guess is that the Dual Xeon machine had memory running significantly slower then the 980x sys and mem speed isnt listed nor are the timings. Even as such the differences are not all that diff.

EDIT: Also 4.3 On a properly set up dual xeon is very attainable. Actually mine is running at 4.3 right now with about 20 mins of setup time

I'd say thats a pretty good turn out on a machine thats not yet tweaked and running at 4.3Ghz with memory currently at 1400Mhz at crappy 9-9-9 timings and no Ram pagefile.

On air. Your preoccupation with extreme cooling, Huge amounts of RAM, SSDs out the Wazoo seems to be unrelated to actual performance or utility. And that's fine, as long as you can see what's what.

Thanks for testing your rig on that benchmark, those are some very good results! I am interested in hearing your disk I/O test result too.

Also the more I think about it, I bet that going with dual xeons would probably be more beneficial for the ultra high-res editing that I'm trying to do, since these benches are probably geared more towards a standard 1080p editing workflow rather than the 6k by 3.5k video that I'm using (which is more than 10x the bandwidth of 1080p)

Yeah, I admit that the phase cooler is really more for fun, I'm just using it because I would have needed to buy one anyway to bench the processors Intel sends me.

In the case of the RAM and HDD/SSD's, I'm pretty sure they really do make a difference though.

For example, here's a graph on the RAM amount to performance ratio:



It would also be great to edit/render at least 2 streams of the 6k footage in real-time, and the video the camera takes is 800MB/s. Going by other's results, (after I get the array fixed) I should be getting about ~1800MB/s for the sequential read speed on the 8 SSD array. That way I could safely have 2 streams of the 6k video taking up 1600MB/s with a leftover 200MB/s for background tasks.
