But seriously guys is there any way to make sure my current RAM is compatible with the SR-2 other than to buy it and test it myself? It's off brand memory so I highly doubt anyone else with an SR-2 would have the same RAM kit.

Thanks
What kind of ram is it?

1) Contact EVGA and ask them about the specific kit , perhaps lookup what the timings are and which IC chips it has.

2) Find someone local with and SR-2 that you can try it in.

3) Send it over here and Ill try it for you on mine.

It would also be great to edit/render at least 2 streams of the 6k footage in real-time, and the video the camera takes is 800MB/s. Going by other's results, (after I get the array fixed) I should be getting about ~1800MB/s for the sequential read speed on the 8 SSD array. That way I could safely have 2 streams of the 6k video taking up 1600MB/s with a leftover 200MB/s for background tasks.
Hey, I just wanted to interject and make sure you know that you are hardly ever going to be editing at full res. You do color correction and thats pretty much it. Most of the time your going to be playing back the video at 1/4 resolution for cut's. A low end quadro or hacked 480gtx with just an 930/950 is enough to do that pretty much as fast as your computer. The only time you will see a huge difference is when you do your final render which will be a bit faster. I am not trying to diminish your build or anything but I am just saying, don't worry about bandwidth and having some **** computer.

I mean, my macbook pro with a 9400m plays back my 7D footage at full res with a color correction layer and a mask no problem... all at the native 7D codec.

I find it hard for anyone to justify spending more then 5-10k on a computer considering it will be out dated in ~5 years. Maybe save some cash and buy a car with a sick stereo and go pickup chicks .

Hi octopus, you make a very good point, but you have to remember that this footage is literally 800MB/s-900MB/s while 7D footage is no more than 6.25MB/s. That's over 125 times the amount of data from a Full HD 7D video. This is mainly because it films in a 4:4:4 chroma ratio, the video is partially uncompressed, and obviously has a much higher resolution. I also do a lot of video Rotobrushing in After Effects CS5 which takes a very very long time. I actually just finished building an i7 930 (water cooled)/ GTX 465 / 2 HDD (7200RPM) RAID 0 / 12GB computer for one of my friends to help raise some money for the SR-2 and other new components. I tested that computer with the video footage and it basically ran like a slug; I had to wait almost 2 whole days to render a 10 minute 6k clip (which included a few effects, color corrections, and 3D animations). I also have a Dell Studio XPS 16 laptop that is very similar to your MBP, and as you said it can back 7D 1080p video with color corrections/effects in real time perfectly fine - but when I import the 6k footage... not so much. It dies. Literally.

And about spending the extra money on a nicer car, that's a great idea! O wait I cant drive yet... jk

BTW I will be folding whenever I'm not editing so having the extra computing power really helps for that too. That way I won't have to use any of my other rigs for a dedicated folding farm either.

The RAM that I have is a 24GB kit from Komputerbay, has Samsung IC's, and is rated to run at 1600mhz with timings of 8-8-8-24 @ 1.65v.

Unfortunately no one in my area has an SR-2 that I know of. I'll try to contact EVGA as you suggested; They'll probably have an answer. (I doubt they've even heard of Komputerbay before)

Thank you very much though for offering to test the RAM, I probably won't need to do that but you never know

Thanks, Good luck on your build!

EDIT: By the way, since I'm basically reconstructing 2/3 of this build, I was thinking I might as well give it a new name. Do you guys have any suggestions?
