Which one would be the better CPU
first one has a processor type of 0.13 µm
other one has a processor type of 90nm <-- newer type but now they have developed 65nm but not for AMD yet. will run a bit cooler and will oc better
San Diego is better

To add to the replies already posted above...

1) The San Diego supports SSE3 Instructions (MMX-like instructions created to accelerate multimedia applications) where as the ClawHammer doesn't

2) The San Diego has an enhanced memory controller where as the ClawHammer doesn't.
Athlon 64 processors have a limitation. When four DDR400/PC3200 memory modules are installed on the system, they are accessed at 333 MHz and not at 400 MHz. This was corrected on Venice and San Diego cores. CPUs based on these cores access the four memory modules at 400 MHz.

About the 1 dollar difference, AMD is probably trying to encourage people to buy the newest technology. Just like the P4 5xx (old technology) used to cost more than 6xx (newer technology) on NewEgg a while ago (don't know if that's still the case).

If you are planning on overclocking, get a 3700+ (same core, just w/o the 12X multi). Their recent steppings have been overclocking higher, plus they are more than $100 cheaper.

Zone is 99% correct... a few of the newest nForce MB can manage 4x512 better then previous designs.
Very good follow up to the others info Zone

I agree with erauman. Just get the most recent stepping of the 3700+ San Diego for 100 bucks cheaper. You can easily overclock to make up the 200Mhz, plus more. The 3700+ with the more recent stepping on newegg is the one with less reviews and a brighter picture for some reason.

Thanks The Duke.
But there's still 1% I would like to get right
My next build is going to be an AMD unless Intel takes the lead for a while (starting with Conroe). I still have my doubts about that as I feel AMD hasn't unveiled all the plans yet.

i just got a san diego from newegg a little over a week ago. I had ordered the newer E6 but got an E4 with stepping KACAE which few have seen but overclocks well enough for me, runs really cool, and uses low volts. My board only can use a clockgen so i'll never know its limits but others have gone up to 3ghz on air and low voltage. The newer E6 SanDiego is supposed to be a toledo dual core with one disabled and better memory controller with bug fixes, but the E4 is working fine for me.
