Upgrade time?

Thread Starter
I was thinking about throwing out 500- 550 bucks or so on an upgrade from my sig rig. I'm thinking of going an i7 860 route w new 1156 motherboard, keep my memory and maybe see if i can squeez in a better graphics card if my budget allows.

I do some mild gaming, but mostly video editing,TONS of blueray/dvd burning & converting, and I'd like to overclock, if I can budget in a new cooler.

As of now I can only convert one dvd/blu ray at a time within a reasonble ammount of time. What would I need to have two conversions or so going on, and maybe a burning to DL dvd session going on also... Any thoughts/ suggestions/ ideas?

I know microcenter has some good deals on the i7's right now.

Or should I just hold out lol?

I suggest waiting for the AMD bulldozers that will have 8 or more cores that will help with encoding speeds. I was thinking of upgrading myself, no not myself--my computer...but now I want to hold off untill the new AMD CPUs come out which will lower the price of the 1090T which is what I intend to buy.

HAHA, funny stuff!

Thanks for your input. I have mostly used intel CPU's, and I have heard about the bulldozers coming down the pipe. Ill do a little research and check into it.

Another question.

I see the i7 950s are dropping to around 300 dollars now, so I was thinking this may also be worth an upgrade. What do ya'll think?

I was also wondering about my memory on a 1366 socket board. As of now, I have 4 sticks off ddr3 memory at DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600), but they are two different manufacturers. One is CORSAIR XMS3 2GB at 9-9-9-24 stock timings, and the other is Team Xtreem 2GB at 7-7-7-21 stock timings. Is there a 1366 motherboard out there which will run this setup, or will I have to go triple channel?

You have two choices, keep waiting, or buy now, there will always be new stuff on the horizon.
I bought an i7 950, Asus P6X58D-E, and 6gb corsair dominator. I just cant wait no longer lmao.

I would actually put more money into the build and go an i7 930 build since its $200 on microcenter...and your going to have to go triple channel...its faster as well
