GTX 480 has cheap screws :(

Thread Starter
I have these sets of precision screwdrivers from Eklind and Wiha. I took most of the screws out from my GTX 480 pretty well. However there was this one screw near the GPU that was just stuck for some reason and got stripped.

I had to drill out the screw head with a drill/dremel and then twist out the remaining screw with some pliers.

Nvidia should use better screws. Even good quality precision screwdrivers cannot overcome the soft Nvidia screws.

You arent the first person I've seen notice this. You'd think a $500 graphics card would come with quality stainless steel screws.

Isn't it PNY's screw job?

I ran into the same issue with my 470 only it wasn't one around the GPU. I'm still debating whether or not its worth it if I'm not planning on an aftermarket cooler to go after it. The thought of using a drill on a delicate $300 piece of tech sorta scares me. I can only cringe at the thought of doing it to a 480.

I completely agree. The trick with these screws are using 100% the correct bit and pushing down really hard and giving a quick twist (but carefully). Once you loosen them, they come out really easily. I've dealt with these kinds of screws before on all kinds of hardware.

I have a stripped screw on my 470 I get all of the other ones off, but the last one will not turn for anything, and eventually the screw is ruined. Not particularly comfortable with the idea of drilling it out either, so I've just let it be. I'll probably try to make some sort of notch in the screw head so I can unscrew it, eventually.

I really don't understand why such a "universal" decision to use such a soft metal for tiny screws was made.

Realistically speaking, almost all screws of these sizes are made with identical softness because you don't need much torque to turn them. The problem is the manufacturer machines overtighten them and leave you to needing a lot of force to get them dislodged. It's more of an assembly flaw rather than a cheap screw.

Yeah, I stripped a screw when putting a waterblock on one of my 480s. Had to drill it out.

I had to put up with the madness of these screws quite a few times, Open should know how many Fermis I've gone through, but any time you mustn't strip a stubborn screw the trick is to apply a LOT of pressure (well a lot within reason) and turn slowly, if you see the screw isn't turning and you're starting to strip it, try again. It's tedious but worth the effort.
