How to: Get recorded events off your Dish Network PVR/DVR 501, 508, or 510!

I had been searching for months on how to get movies off my DVR, and I found out how, it is SO easy!

What you need:

A DVR (501, 508, and 510 are the only ones I know that work) Mabye the 721 and 921 work, I will try the 921's warranty expires.
Philips Screwdriver
a Fast! computer (duh)
PVR Explorer (attached)
Blank DVD's
DVD Decrypter (optional, use it if you don't have Nero) (attached)
DVD Shrink

And.. If your into the whole editing your shows to get rid of commericals VideoReDo. its 50 dollars, but if you just fastforward through commercials, you don't need it! (fixes AV sync issues)

For the purpose of this FAQ I will be using a Dish network 501 PVR. it is the orig. PVR from dish network.

Step one: Turn off and unplug your DVR.

Step two. Unscrew the two screws holding the cover on, slide it off.

Interesting side note here, the insides look ALOT like a Xbox, except without the DVD-rom.

Step three: Un-snap the clips off the front panel to get access to the front screw, it doesn't have to come off all the way, just enough to get the screw out.

Step four: Unscrew the three screws holding the hard drive cage to the DVR.

Step five: Unscrew the four screws holding the hard drive to the cage.
REMEMBER WHERE THE SCREWS GO!

Step six: Shut down your computer and hook up the hard drive to your
machine. Adjust anything in the BIOS if you have to.

Step Seven: Fire up PVR explorer, and let it find your hard drive (windows won't see it, I believe that Dish network DVR's use Linux as a base OS, I know Tivo does.

Step eight: Select the programs that you want to copy (One or all, it doesn't matter)

Step nine: Click extract, and sit back, it takes about 35 minutes on a 2.4gig Celeron with 256mb ram or about 3 minutes on an amd 64 3400+ with 1gb ram.

Step ten: The file will start Muxing, it takes about 2 minutes on the amd rig.

Step eleven: you now have a shiny new MPEG video in your "My Videos" folder. Test it to make sure it is the right video, i had a few mix ups, wrong names, or with Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy it was in the wrong language. when it is ok, go on to step twelve.
THE FILES ARE HUGE! (WinDVD does NOT record the size right, a 2.13 gb file shows up as 8.7gb. Ignore it!

Step Twelve: Fire up your burning software. For this FAQ i used Sonic MyDVD. Great software for coming with my mom's computer.. Follow software. This is your plain old MPEG file, no DIVX or any other codec. Cool isn't it? Its slow, even on the amd rig...

Step Thirteen: Put your DVR back together, you remember right? if not, go up and reverse the steps!

Step Fourteen: Test to make sure the DVD's work in your DVD Player.

Step Fifteen. hook up your DVR again, and delete all your old recordings, now you have all your space back!

Your done, good job! There are some cons in doing this:
  • Your warranty is voided.
  • The quality isn't great.
Otherwise, thats all guys. For help visit DishRip

er, the zip file shortcut doesn't appear to be working, I get a blank web page. I can't seem to find this software app (PVR Explorer) anywhere. Does anyone know what happened to it?
