Something seems odd about my 950...

Background info: Specs in profile
@ 260 FSB I'm stable at 1.35 vcore
@ 266 FSB I have to up the vcore to 1.41 to be stable
@ 270 FSB vcore has to be at 1.48....

What am I missing here?! This is a huge jump in vcore just to get 10mhz on the FSB.

I'm going to try raising the PCIE frequency to 110 and see if this helps, but I'm leary of leaving it that high all the time.

Any input or suggestions? I still want to hit 5ghz on air damnit!

no. your not missing anything. thats how overclocking goes. i wont go much higher with the volts. and 5ghz on air with anything less then a 955ex is dreaming bro, unless you live in antartica that is.

Sometimes what we want and what we get are not inclusive. I have found that once there is a diminishing return for fsb/vcore this is then the time to find the sweet spot which for you is obviously ~260FSB. It's pretty clear that if you have to raise a Netburst Prescott 950 (which are not all that responsive to vcore anyway) 0.13V to make 10FSB you have found diminishing returns.

If you want 5GHz then a move to more extreme methods are suggested.

could it be my ram holding me back? It has to be something because 920's and 930's are hitting 4.5ghz with less vcore.....

Are you still running a 1:1 with your RAM? Try running a divider on it to get your CPU speed higher.

you could always get higher..but i dont know about the performance part..id love to be at 4.5..but haha thats funny for me...but if you just want to hit 5ghz then go for the divider

i agree with chim3ra

When you start to run into that voltage issue, its nothing else but the CPU, you are pretty much reaching the limit for that CPU. I believe that you have found the limit, its kinda hard to say for sure, but I know thats how it works with mine. Ive got to make huge Vcore increases once I get to a certain point which is telling me that the CPU is pretty much maxxed out, although I can get the CPU up to 4.3ghz it runs rock stable at 4.0ghz. You can try some ram and PCIE changes but I dont think that is your problem. Remember this is just my personal opinion.

Did you try losening the timings of your RAM? Also note: most of these overclocks for the 9xx CPU's have been done with the P5WD2-E and it's i975X chipset.

Try using a better cooling device, maybe?

I remember seeing a guy hitting 5.0ghz on air with a Tuniq Tower 120 but his room was 40F, opened his window to let all the cool air from outside.

Take a look at this thread: HERE. And also this here shows a 4.54ghz @ 1.464Vc using the stock cooler: HERE, so maybe you need a better cooling solution.....like a Tuniq Tower 120.

get a zalman. or some good old H2O. who cares how high someone eles got the presler. all chips are differant. they come from differant silicone wafers and differant parts of the waffer are better then others too. so its really a luck thing. if you dont like your max oc try rmaing the chip and getting another one. also it seems easier to overclock the seller of the preslers because i belives that they are the one not overclocked from the factory. done they just add multpliers anyways?
