mission critical SSD recommendation

Thread Starter
Would you use a SSD for a mission critical drive (PC, not server) at work? If so, could someone recommend me one? It must have TRIM, garbage collection and be about 128 Gb. (~$400 budget)

Speed is important, but not as important as reliability!

Thanks!

If it is mission critical, you shouldn't be running only one drive. That said... TRIM does not work in RAID.

Also, you're not getting a 128GB Enterprise SSD for $400. Those are SLC drives.

The Intel X25-E (G1 controller) is $700 for 60GB.
The Vertex EX 120GB is $1200.
Once again...

Well if you say "Mission Critical", it wouldn't be too hard to just have a good SSD running programs+OS, and have the documents stored out on the network NAS/SAN. Thats a very common setup for corporate computers (SSD or disk drive setups) since the SAN/NAS will be backed up very frequently, and is rarely unavailable.

mission critical? lives at stake?

my thinking is that an SSD is probably as likely if not less likely then a HDD to fail... unless we're talking about enterprise or "workstation" grade hardware e.g. SLC drives and SAS HDDs...

The best solution would be to have a secondary large storage drive in the system with regular system image backups...

Or if you're really worried about availability you could run RAID-1 but you would lose TRIM as Duckie mentioned... and RAID-1 doesn't protect against other failures like motherboard or power supply...

It's all a question of value for money, given enough money, you could just have a few hot spare whole machines...

Ram-San

The only solid state drives I would trust my data to.

They are pricey though.

Six-figures.... That might be out of his budget of $400.

Why wouldn't you trust enterprise-level SSDs? They are server rated...

I mentioned RamSan due to the durability. I forgot some of them are in the 6 figure range. BTW: they are pcie boards and not sas or sata. That is one of the reasons for the cost. They are the fastest solid state storage devices out there.

Well, Given the price restrictions, the E-class drives are a great option. I particularly like the Intel ones due to the way they are made and the extra cells available in case some die (which they will). I think it is the X25 models (checking now).

This is the one we recommend to our customers;

Whatever you get, make sure you stay with the SLC memory type as they have a longer expected life.

The problem with the E-class is that they do not support TRIM nor have Garbage Collection. All enterprise SSDs over provision spare space more than consumer drives. That's why the initial SandForce SSDs were 100GB (28GB spare) and then later changed to 120GB (8GB spare). Consumers don't as much spare space.

SLC also benefits from better write performance.

Well, not lives at stake, but certainly my job is at stake

We have a pc that is 24/7, lots of apps loaded which are high dollar to license and difficult to install and must be installed on the PC, not a server. Have had the drive go bad once, and it was a pain to re-install everything. So the thinking was to get a SSD to reduce the chance of mechanical failure.

And, yeah, $400 is such a tight requirement, but I am trying.

To fit your budget:

Get 2xRAID1 Vertex 96GB. (redundency with ITGC)
-OR-
Get 2xRAID1 Kingston 128GB (redundency with ITGC... lower performance/more space)
-OR-
Get a Crucial 128GB plus daily/weekly imaging of the drive. (TRIM with backup)
