Slow Raid-0 Help plz.

Hi guys

Just got my Raid-0 up and running yesterday. But not as I expected. The loadtime of XP is a bit faster than normal, not much. Loading of utility like Norton etc. is faster, but not even close to 2xspeed. Handeling of big files is snap, just as it should be.

Tests gives me around 100mb/s sustained, depending on how much i doo on the side, so that seems to be OK.

Raid status and discs tjeck out OK.

Newest drivers and bios IS installed.

Why is it then so slow in opening windows etc.???

Could it be that I have to use a sertain strip sice?? Right now it's running default 128k.

This is my setup:
Asus P5WD2-E Premium
P4 640 3.2
1 gb DDR2-5400
NV-6600GT
M-Audio 24/96
2XMaxdiamond10 80gb SATA2 Raid-0 for OS
2XMaxdiamond10 300gb SATA2 for storage
2XHitashi ATA133 120gb for storage

Thanks

RAID0 is double the speed, in theory. It doesnt actually mean it will be. You can try the standard things like defrag the array, get rid of spyware etc

Just give your PC a good spring cleaning

It's a brand new installation, newly defragmented, and all that stuff.

I dont care much for testresults, except for telling me if I'm on the right track. I can't use a higt score for anything, if it dosn't translate into real life performance. But thanks anyway!

Just got wery disapointed, since it was also in the bootup and startup sequence I hoped for better performance.

Still. .... Windows run in 4k "blocks", will it doo any good to set the stripsice to match?

You want to keep a 4 to 1 ratio. I suggest using 16kb stripe size since Windows uses 4 kb clusters. If you search this site deeper, you'll find a nice writeup done by NCSA.
