9800pro vs x1600pro AGP

Thread Starter
So as you can see from my system stats in my sig I'm running a 9800pro AGP and I'm looking to get a little more performance out of BattleField 2 and Oblivion. My problem is this, I don't want to upgrade my system to PCI-E until Vista/DX10 comes out so I'm stuck on the AGP platform for now.

Is it worth my time/money to upgrade from my 9800pro to an x1600 (pro) with either 256mb or 512mb of vram? What other cards would you reccomend with a similar price point as the x1600.

Thanks,

- Tatusmi

I dont think its worth the upgrade. It may give u slightly better but not that much. I think that card of ures is still a monster. u could overclock and unlock it to xt speeds!

Well yeah the shear amount of pipes compared to each other is one thing to consider......just make sure and buy the 256mb version and not the 512mb. 512mb is way too much for the 128-bit controller. Look the 1600pro has 12 pipes and the 9800pro has 8 pipes. I'd make the jump to the 1x00 series......

Check out a quick side by side comparison of the two..here..the figures quoted on some operations are quite surprising.

cheers

edit : an X800GTO would be a worthwhile update but will see you paying around the CAD$240-250 mark from what I have seen in your country and as indicated below if you favour the green goblin the 6800GS will afford a nice gain with some extra eye candy as a bonus.

What's your budget?
Anyway, I don't think it would be worth your money to upgrade to just a Radeon x1600Pro (9800 was a high-end GPU in its days, and the x1600 is only mid-range). Try looking at the 6800GS (too bad the 7600 isn't on AGP...), I'm planning on one.

Edit: I take way too much time writing replies in forums...

your system is limited in ability overall(its not bad just older) and I doubt you would receive would be minimal at best. THe 9800 pro is still a good agp card , you really are better off saving your money and investing towards the machine you want for windows vista.

I agree with "noneed4me2" because i still only have a little 9600 4 gods sake. until vista and DX10 come out i can't b bother upgarding. our PC's still run everything altleast. BTW there is a 7800 AGP out now if u really wanna get a nice card 4 your PC. I do like ATI's but that is the best AGP card out at the moment. also your computer would get a full use out of that. my mate only has as AMD 64 3200+. and he has a 7800 AGP. they r a nice card. if u have the money 2 spare u might wanna look at it. but also take into conderation if that u spend more money on your current PC u wont have as much 2 spend on your new one

thanks for all your input. Im still considering the option... but in talking with some friends and after reading over the posts here I have begun to start thinking about building something awesome now (X2 4400+ / x1900xt) and just stick with that base platform for awhile... the trend in the industry now is not how limited you are by the whole pc so much as you are by your video card. So when vista/dx10 drops I'll upgrade to a nice dx10 supporting card then w/ the x2 chip.

I dunno... many options. I'll keep everyone posted on what I do.

Thanks!
