Serious Prob on New install please help

Thread Starter
I just put the new rig together--ECS mobo 820D CPU 160 IDE HDD--loaded XP pro--it apparently installed the OS. but will not get past the "Start Windows Normally?" black screen of annoyance. I have tried resetting, cold shutdown--when I try to start in Safe Mode it hangs up at one of the .sys files--that's as far as it goes--if I try Normal or last good config it just hangs with a black screen.

Is there something I am missing--this is the first time I have ever had this prob.

the mobo is: RC410L/800-M--the RAM is Kingston HyperX PC2 5400 (667) and is not one of the RAM mfrs listed in the mobo support.

As a side note in the ECS BIOS I cannot adjust any of the clock settings for the CPU or RAM--is there a physical jumper I need to adjust? I don't see it in the documentation. My DDR2 667 is being recognised as DDR2 333 and I cannot change it in BIOS...

I thought the ECS boards were made for OCing--there are no adjustments for that whatsoever in BIOS.
I cannot load the mobo drivers until the OS is up and running, right? Any clues?

Really frustrated by this. Never happened witht he ASUS mobos I have built on....

Well to update the bios, if you have a floppy driver you can copy the bios update from another computer and run the update to from the floppy to you new computer. It sounds though as if maybe windows was not installed corectly or some files are corupt. I would try to do a windows repair or try to reinstall it again.

Appreciate the suer fast response--trying to TS this deal right now. I will start with a repair--might not be a mobo issue. As you say seems like some file got corrupted--as it hangs at the same spot in safe start up each time.

Really was hoping not to have to reload.

Any tips about the best way to use the repair console?

I found a BIOS protect jumper--if I change that jumper maybe the BIOS will let me change the RAM speed.... don't want too many issues at once so I will try that first,

Nada--only allows BIOS flash...still no luck--used recovery console and ran chkdsk fixmbr bootcfg /rebuild even wnet in and created a specific boot order which was stupid--as there's only one version of Windows on the HDD.

Going to try a reinstall.

Gonna hold off flashing th BIOS until I know for sure it is not a SW issue...

Still cannot get DDR 667 -- still sees it as 333 with no adjustment allowed in the BIOS...wierd. Not liking the ECS mobo too much right now....

Sounds like you will hit some problems with that mobo. It does not support the ram that you have? I think thats what you said in you post. How about trying to call the manufactor, maybe they have a fix for it.
