How to: Resize Partition if you need more space.

Thread Starter
If you have orginially specified 30 gigs to you system partition but then realized you will need more room, this FAQ will help you do that. It is very simple and free way to do this.

There is software available for you to purchase that will do this through a windows interface. Such software as Partition Magic, costs around 50-80 dollars. If you do not want to spend this kind of money and still need someway to do this, Linux will help you do it.

BEFORE CONTINUEING PLEASE BACK UP YOUR DATA. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DATA LOST.

FIRST: Download the following ISO image file. It is 25mb in size and will need to be burned to a cd for you to boot from. DOWNLOAD FILE

SECOND: Burn the image file you just downloaded via Nero or any other software you use to burn cds.

Third: Boot from the cd you just burned and Press "ENTER" once you see the GOLIVE screen. It will promt you to EITHER press ENTER or Wait 20sec.
At that point the linux boot cd will detect all your hardware and boot into a GUI interface. When promted to select language, just select the defaults. You will press enter to the following 3 questions.

FOUR: Once everything is done, you will come to the window to resize your partitions.

Starting from the left, you will see how many partitions you have, the filesystem the partition is, the current size, the amount being used, and the amount not being used.

Your partitions will be listed as such. /dev/hda1 representing your first partition, /dev/hda2 representing your second and so on.

RESIZING THE PARTITION
WITH UNPARTITIONED SPACE AVAILABLE. ONLY
1.Select the partition you want to resize.
2. Click the button on top that says "Resize/Move"
3. You can specify the size you want to change the partition to in MB or by grabing the black arrow on towards the right and sliding it forward or back.
4.Click RESIZE once you have specified the size you would like.
5. Click the APPLY button on top and select APPLY again once the new windows pops up. It will then resize the partitions.

Last: Once finished, you can quit the program and click anywhere on the screen and select reboot. You machine will boot up with its resized partition.

This program is usefull if you do not have anoter partition created. If you do, the way it works is only forward so that it cannot make the 2nd partion smaller so that there is space before it to enlarge the 1st partition. If you make it smaller, it will only free up space for you to create another partition after the second one.
I personally like Partition Magic better because it can do just that. It can make the Partition smaller either to free up space before it or after. It will move all the files and make the according changes. I have used this myself and had no problems.

Hope this helps you guys out.

Feel free to make suggestions.

PS: This software is also usefull to create new partitions. When creating a new partion, simply right click in the UNPARTIONED space and select NEW.
Specify the size and select the File System Type. Default is ext2. Click that button and you will see the NTFS which is for windows.
